Hello everyone, a few months ago I bought an IKEA Hemnes sideboard and now want to clean it as gently as possible using natural methods, as I prefer to avoid chemical cleaners. Could you please share tips on which natural cleaning techniques work best specifically for the Hemnes furniture? It is especially important to me that the surface, whether lacquered wood or veneered material, is not damaged. I am also interested in how you deal with stubborn stains without harming the protective layer. Are there any home remedies that work well, or is it better to use special natural care products? I look forward to detailed responses, preferably with advice on mixing ratios, application times, and techniques.
If the furniture is used frequently, it should be cleaned several times a week, ideally using only a dry cloth or one that is slightly dampened.
For stains, I first try cleaning with warm water, and only if that doesn’t work do I carefully treat it using the Castile soap tip mentioned in post 6.
Avoid anything abrasive or scratching, and do not use harsh chemicals.
This method has worked for me for years with my Hemnes bed and dressers.

It is also important to avoid standing moisture. Sometimes after cleaning, the surface is not thoroughly dried—this causes the pine wood substrate to swell, which can permanently damage the appearance.
Sealants, like those used on Hemnes furniture, are durable but still require maintenance by preventing moisture damage.
In summary, I recommend:
- Wiping damp only with mild dish soap or castile soap
- Avoiding vinegar or acidic cleaners as a routine
- Thoroughly drying immediately
- Regularly dusting with a dry microfiber cloth
A natural oiling or waxing treatment is not necessary for painted Hemnes and can even cause problems by altering the surface.
For stains that won’t come off, sometimes a gentle use of a cleaning eraser (cleaning pad) for painted wood helps, but always use very light pressure. Test first every time.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful and detailed responses! Here is my summary:
- Diluted castile soap is a gentle and well-tested cleaning method for Hemnes furniture
- Vinegar should be used only sparingly and with great caution, as it can be potentially harmful
- Immediate drying after cleaning is essential
- Natural care products like oils or waxes are not recommended for painted Hemnes furniture
I will try these tips during the next cleaning and will carefully use castile soap for tougher stains. If I want to refresh or provide extra protection again, I will avoid chemical products to prevent damaging the furniture.
Thanks again for your patient and expert support!
