Hello everyone,

I have a question that many of you might be familiar with: How can I ensure that my Billy shelves from Ikea remain stable even after extended use and do not develop any dangerous weak points?

I am especially looking for practical tips on how to proactively prevent the shelves from wobbling, bending, or even tipping over. I am particularly interested in the recommended load limits, whether wall mounting is essential, and if there are any special tricks to improve stability.

Who here has experience with this and can provide detailed recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Is it advisable to reinforce Billy bookcases from underneath to prevent sagging?

Yes, this is a well-established and straightforward method to extend the lifespan of older or heavily loaded shelves.

You can attach small metal brackets or wooden strips precisely to the underside of the shelf either by screwing or gluing them in place. This helps support the load because they share the weight.

However, it is important to ensure that the load is distributed evenly. Supporting only at single points is less effective.

This effort is especially worthwhile for large Billy bookcases with very deep shelves or when storing a significant amount of heavy items. Otherwise, it might be sufficient to occasionally readjust the shelves, tighten screws, and ensure proper wall anchoring.

That’s exactly what I did myself! Additionally, I reinforced some of my shelves with a thin metal profile – it may look a bit makeshift, but it holds perfectly.

Sometimes a little DIY is the best solution when you want to secure against high loads. And if you treat the shelves with a bit of care, you’ll enjoy them for a long time.

Oh, and don’t forget to anchor them to the wall – shelves fall down faster than you might expect otherwise ;-)

Good luck with stabilizing!

I know that feeling! It’s frustrating when you see your favorite books and worry that the shelf might break.

I can only encourage you to be patient in searching for a more stable solution and to play it safe. Your idea to add extra support is really smart. Sometimes it’s also fun to build the shelf together with a friend and include those modifications right away – it gives you a better sense of control.

And don’t worry, with your experience here, you’re on the best path to making the shelf safe for the long term! 😉
