Hello everyone, I need some support with my project: I want to modify the Ikea Besta system to serve as a slim yet functional sideboard for my hallway. My hallway is quite narrow, about 70 cm (28 inches) wide, so the sideboard needs to stay slim but still provide enough storage space for shoes, keys, mail, and small items. The plan is to reduce the standard Besta cabinet depth of 60 cm (24 inches) significantly, ideally to 30 to a maximum of 35 cm (12 to 14 inches) depth. Has anyone ever done something like this or can give tips on how to rebuild the cabinet confidently and stably when making it this slim? I’m also interested in advice on suitable front designs, door types, and clever interior layouts. Many thanks in advance!

Does anyone have experience with how deep a sideboard should be at minimum to still easily store shoes or folding boxes inside? This depends largely on the type of shoes or boxes, but as a general rule: a volume of about 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 inches) floor area per compartment is recommended, with more being more comfortable. Typical sneakers require about 28–33 cm (11–13 inches) depth.
With 35 cm (14 inches) depth, you have some room to spare, ideally with shelves and drawers from the Besta series. If possible, I would choose this compromise rather than extreme reductions below 30 cm (12 inches).
For stable support: since you want it to stand freely, a base made of plywood or with cross braces is advisable, reinforced with dowel joints or metal brackets.
Additionally, depending on your needs, you can use height-adjustable shelves or removable boxes inside.
Have you already measured how much space remains after renovation between the wall and doors or other furniture? This is important to avoid blocking passageways.
Use thinner plywood boards with a thickness of 12-15 mm (0.5-0.6 inches) for the sides in the renovation.
You can install the back panel vertically for additional stability.
If you install sliding doors, make sure to use space-saving tracks with minimal clearance.
Adjustable shelves are recommended for the interior layout.

I like the idea of a floating effect. I’m imagining the legs being subtle but sturdy.I think furniture with delicate legs always feels much airier in the hallway.
Perhaps a base made of a thin metal plate with slim legs would also create a cool, modern look.
That also reduces the risk of wobbling on uneven floors.
Additionally, you could install LED strips inside that light up as soon as you enter. Both functional and stylish.
