Hello everyone,

I have a few IKEA Malm furniture pieces that are coated with a clear lacquer by default. My question is: How can I clean these furniture items effectively without damaging or affecting the lacquer? I want to avoid harsh cleaning agents or incorrect methods that could leave the surface dull or stained. If there are special cleaning cloths, certain household remedies, or recommended products that are particularly gentle, I would appreciate any advice. I am also interested to know if there are any differences depending on whether the furniture has a light or dark finish.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Use a damp microfiber cloth and, if necessary, mild dish soap. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the paint.

When cleaning Malm furniture, it is important to avoid solvents or harsh cleaners, as these can soften the paint surface and damage the finish. A soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth is recommended. For tougher dirt, a few drops of a pH-neutral dish soap can be added to the water. After cleaning, the surface should be wiped dry with a cloth to prevent water spots.

I agree, as many paint damages are caused by improper cleaning.

There are generally no differences in cleaning between light and dark Malm furniture, but fingerprints are more visible on dark finishes—so it is advisable to wipe these more often with a dry cloth without water.

Important: No solvents, ammonia, or bleach. Simply wipe the furniture with a slightly damp cloth. For grease stains, you can add a bit of dish soap to the water. Anything else may damage the finish.

An addition to the previous explanations: Malm furniture is coated with a synthetic resin lacquer, which is generally durable but sensitive to solvents and abrasive substances.

Avoid using alcohol, nail polish remover, or acetone as cleaning agents. Sharp scouring pads can also cause micro-scratches.

Instead, it is helpful to use a slightly damp cloth with a very mild soapy solution. After cleaning, the surface should be immediately dried with a soft, dry cloth to prevent water spots or streaks.

Regular dusting also helps prevent dust particles from scratching the surface.

This is definitely recommended.
