Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture and I’m unsure about the best way to clean it without damaging the surface or material. From what I understand, the Hemnes series is mostly made of solid pine wood with a paint or stain finish that could be sensitive to the wrong cleaning products or overly damp cloths.

I’m especially interested in which cleaning products are suitable, whether it’s better to use damp or dry cloths, and how to gently remove stains or heavier dirt. Are there any specific do’s and don’ts when caring for this type of furniture?

I would really appreciate it if anyone with experience or expertise could help me maintain the value and appearance of my Hemnes furniture over the long term.

For cleaning IKEA Hemnes furniture, I generally recommend the following approach:

- Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents or those containing alcohol, ammonia, or harsh solvents, as they can damage the finish.
- Use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove dust or light dirt. The cloth should be only dampened and well wrung out to prevent water spots or swelling of the wood.
- For tougher stains, mild soap solutions (e.g., a few drops of dish soap in lukewarm water) can be used. Do not rub the furniture while wet; instead, wipe briefly and immediately follow with a dry cloth.
- Treat stains as soon as possible because dried residues are harder to remove.

Important: Never clean furniture with abrasive sponges or scouring pads to avoid scratches.

These recommendations are based on the material properties of solid, oiled, or lacquered pine wood, as commonly used in Hemnes furniture.

This summary is already very good. I would like to go into a bit more detail because with Hemnes many small details should be considered to protect the surface.

The Hemnes series is usually treated with a white stain and/or a lacquer coat, which looks durable but can be quite sensitive to moisture or aggressive chemicals. Therefore, I strongly recommend the following:

- Use only distilled or at least low-lime water to avoid lime spots.
- For regular cleaning, a soft microfiber cloth gently wiped over the surface is sufficient.
- If you use soap, the solution should be very mild and preferably neutral – ideally, a gentle dishwashing liquid with less than 5% surfactant content.
- Important: After wiping, immediately dry with a soft cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood, which can cause swelling or discoloration.

If you need to remove stains, I recommend:

- First try lukewarm water with a very soft cloth,
- If that does not help, a 1-to-1 mixture of water and white vinegar can be used, applied to a cloth and wiped gently.
- It is absolutely necessary to test this first on inconspicuous areas to ensure the surface does not become matte or stained.

Also, be careful when using furniture polishes or wax solutions, as these often leave a film on Hemnes surfaces that quickly becomes slippery and attracts dust.

Can anyone share how often you clean such furniture? This is also an important factor for maintaining its value.

Thank you for the detailed explanation, valerie-tr! I love my Hemnes furniture and want to take good care of it! 🙂

A small addition from me: I sometimes use very light furniture care oils, but really sparingly, only every few months. This helps keep the surface looking fresh and provides some protection against drying out.

And very important: I never leave my furniture soaking with a damp cloth. Always wipe quickly and dry immediately!

Anyone with Hemnes furniture knows how much charm the wood has. So let’s take good care of it!

That sounds like a good balance. At home, I was unsure at first and mostly just vacuumed the Hemnes furniture or wiped it very carefully with a dry cloth.

However, I notice that sometimes I feel a bit “uncomfortable” when the furniture looks too dry or feels rough. Do you have any experience with whether oiling too often can cause damage?

I don’t want layers to peel off or the surface to discolor over time. Your opinions would help reassure me.

Hey, I can only say: don’t hesitate to regularly treat your Hemnes furniture with natural oils!

I do this every 2-3 months and notice how much more vibrant the wood looks and how soft it feels.

As long as you don’t overdo it, you can’t go wrong. Use a soft cloth to massage the oil in thoroughly. Then let it dry undisturbed, which is very important.

Absolutely avoid scrubbing aggressively or using a lot of water!

Look forward to the great feel and appearance after treatment!
