ᐅ How do I clean IKEA Hemnes furniture in a household with children?

YahyaHello everyone, I have several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces at home – including dressers and nightstands – which we use in our children's room. Since I have young children, there are not only the usual dust and fingerprints but also stains from drinks, sticky fingers, and sometimes small food residues. My question is: What is the best way to clean IKEA Hemnes furniture when you have children at home, without damaging or stressing the surface too much? Are there any special cleaning products or home remedies that you would recommend? And what is the most effective everyday routine to keep the furniture intact and in good condition for as long as possible? I have already tried a few products, but I am not sure if some of them might harm the surface. I look forward to your experiences and tips!
Hello Yahya,
Thank you very much for your detailed and well-formulated question.
IKEA Hemnes furniture has a coated surface (usually matte-layered, foil-coated MDF or pine wood with clear lacquer), which makes cleaning a bit more delicate compared to painted or plastic furniture. In general, you should avoid using aggressive cleaners containing solvents, abrasives, or alcohol, as these can dissolve or dull the finish.
For daily cleaning, I recommend:
- Using a slightly damp (not wet), soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and loose dirt.
- Avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight to prevent discoloration or brittleness of the finish.
For sticky fingerprints or food residues:
- Dissolve a few drops of dish soap in lukewarm water and lightly moisten a soft cloth, making sure no liquid seeps into cracks.
- Gently wipe the stains and then dry with a clean cloth.
I advise caution when using homemade remedies like vinegar or citric acid because they can damage the finish over time due to the wood structure.
If the surface becomes dull despite care, a special furniture care oil can be applied—always test first on an inconspicuous area!
It is also very important to prevent accidents—for example, use coasters or a mat when children are drinking or drawing.
Regarding your furniture: do you have the solid wood version or rather the MDF with foil coating? That slightly affects the suitable cleaning method.
If you need more details, just let me know!

In addition to Lilyglas’s comments:
- IKEA Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid pine wood with a finish that makes the surface durable but also sensitive to mechanical stress.
- For regular cleaning, a damp cloth with a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap is sufficient to effectively remove residues.
- It is important to dry the furniture thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water marks.
- Avoid using aggressive cleaners, abrasive agents, alcohol, or spirits, as these can cause discoloration and damage to the finish.
- For stubborn stains, a gentle cleaning with a sponge is recommended, but avoid abrasive sponges.
Some users also mention using furniture wax to protect the surface, preferably natural waxes that do not contain silicones.
How often do the furniture pieces get wet or have spills in everyday use? That might affect the cleaning frequency.

Lilygla schrieb:That is a good tip; you should definitely be careful not to use too much liquid, as pine wood absorbs moisture and can swell.
Dissolve a few drops of dish soap in lukewarm water and lightly moisten a soft cloth, so no liquid soaks into the seams.

Hi Yahya,
I can recommend the Hemnes furniture from my own experience – what has worked well for us is simply doing the following:
- Don’t start with heavy-duty cleaning at the first little stain – often a damp microfiber cloth is enough to fix the mess.
- For sticky little fingers, a mild dish soap solution works well, as already mentioned here – but always remember: don’t apply too much moisture!
- A trick I love: keep a small spray bottle with water plus a tiny bit of dish soap. This way, you can target the spray precisely and wipe it off immediately with a cloth without spreading too much moisture.
Nothing is more annoying than constant touch-ups or dealing with actual water damage, so it’s worth teaching kids some basic “furniture rules” early on – for example, only opening drinks in a specific spot or always using coasters right away.
If something tougher gets on the furniture, a gentle mix of water, dish soap, and a little lemon juice has helped us – but only for small spots, not large surfaces, as the wood might suffer otherwise.
And yes, this furniture can look quickly worn with kids, but with the right cleaning, you’ll enjoy it for a long time – good luck!
