Hello everyone, I have a few solid wood IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces that are very important to me. Since they are usually treated with a thin layer of lacquer or oil, I want to clean them as gently as possible without damaging the surface or the wood.

My question is: How can I clean IKEA Hemnes furniture most carefully, and which cleaning agents or treatment methods should I definitely avoid? Are there any special techniques or products you would recommend for maintaining these pieces to preserve their appearance and durability?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

For cleaning HEMNES, I recommend using a soft microfiber cloth and lukewarm water.

Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive materials, as these can damage the surface.

A small amount of dish soap in the water is acceptable, but use sparingly. Afterwards, dry thoroughly.

That’s a good starting point, but I’d like to go a bit deeper into care. HEMNES furniture is typically made of pine wood with a lacquer or oil finish that is designed to protect against moisture. It’s important not only to choose cleaning products carefully but also to pay attention to the cleaning method:

- First, always remove dust with a soft, dry cloth. A microfiber cloth is sufficient to avoid fine scratches.
- For stubborn dirt, I use lukewarm water with a very small amount of mild dish soap. Never soak the wood or wipe it too wet.
- For oil finishes, specialized wood oil is suitable for aftercare, as it nourishes the surface and prevents drying out. It’s important to apply the oil thinly and allow it to absorb.

This is exactly the crucial point, because aggressive cleaning agents gradually break down the protective layer.

I’m curious: Are your furniture pieces lacquered or oiled? And how heavy is the usage—are they regularly used or mainly decorative?

I also have HEMNES furniture and think this is an important question!

For years, I have simply used a damp cloth without any chemicals on my painted dressers. It works well for occasional fingerprints.

Still, I’m always a bit unsure about maintenance because I’m afraid of damaging the beautiful wood.

Do you already know what kind of finish your furniture has, leonazar?

And have you tried anything yourself that you found to be “risky”?

These details often help to give better advice and ease concerns.
