jadonHello everyone,
I recently set up some IKEA Hemnes furniture in the children's room and want to clean it gently for long-term care. Since the furniture is mostly made of painted pine wood, I am wondering how to proceed in a way that does not damage the surface and avoids mechanical methods as much as possible.
Specifically, I am interested in which cleaning products are suitable for removing dirt, fingerprints, or stains without harming the paint finish. How often should the furniture be cleaned to maintain its good condition? Are there any proven home remedies or professional tips that are particularly effective for cleaning without being too harsh?
I look forward to your experiences and advice, preferably with explanations so I can best adapt them to the HEMNES furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hello jadon!
What a great question you asked! The HEMNES series is really beautiful, and it’s definitely worth taking good care of it. 😊
I usually clean our HEMNES furniture in the kids’ room with a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap – this protects the surface. It’s important that the cloth is only slightly damp to avoid getting the wood too wet. Sometimes I also use a very diluted vinegar solution in water to remove limescale stains.
Fingerprints come off really well this way, and I definitely avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive products!
One more tip: After wiping, I always dry the furniture immediately with a dry cloth. This helps prevent water marks and protects the finish!
Don’t worry, with this gentle cleaning routine, the furniture will last a long time – give it a try! 💪

Hello jadon,
According to the materials used in IKEA HEMNES furniture (solid pine wood with a lacquer finish), the following cleaning recommendations apply:
- Use a soft, preferably lint-free cloth, ideally microfiber.
- The cloth should be only slightly damp, preferably with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild soap or detergent without aggressive additives.
- Avoid strong cleaning agents, solvents, abrasive cleaners, or alcohol, as they can damage the clear lacquer and cause it to become dull.
- To remove stains, diluted vinegar essence (1:10 with water) or a vinegar-water mixture can be used, but test it first on an inconspicuous area.
- For maintenance, occasionally applying furniture oil or wax suitable for lacquered wood surfaces is possible, but regular light cleaning is generally sufficient.
- Clean only when visible dirt is present; daily damp wiping is not necessary and may unnecessarily stress the surface.
Recommendation: After cleaning, wipe the furniture with a dry cloth to prevent water spots and protect the lacquer layer.
These guidelines are based on common care practices for lacquered solid wood.

For maintenance, you can occasionally use furniture oil or wax that is specifically designed for lacquered wood surfaces, but generally, regular light cleaning is sufficient.I am more cautious here: furniture oil or wax can be counterproductive on lacquered furniture because they form a film on the lacquer surface that attracts dirt and can alter the finish over time.
In my experience, a gentle cleaning with water and mild dish soap, as described by NUPIN, is more effective. Especially for children's furniture, it is also important to use non-toxic substances.
Another point: frequent wiping might wear down the lacquer layer over time. Therefore, it is better to clean only when necessary rather than as a routine measure.
Hello jadon and everyone,
thank you for the interesting posts so far! I would like to share my experience to contribute to the topic of cleaning IKEA HEMNES furniture in a children’s room.
My daughter is very active, so stains have appeared several times on the painted pine wood furniture. This is how I clean it:
- First, I use a dry, soft cloth to remove dust.
- Then a slightly damp cloth with water and a drop of mild dish soap.
- For tougher stains, I use a mixture of water and vinegar (1:20), but not too often, preferably only spot cleaning.
- After every wet cleaning, I wipe down with a dry cloth to avoid any moisture remaining.
I have focused on not using any aggressive cleaners or abrasive cleaning agents, as they can dull the finish. Also, avoid using large amounts of water because wood swells when exposed to moisture and may suffer permanent damage.
With regular, gentle cleaning, the furniture stays looking great for a long time.
Another important point: simple prevention helps a lot, such as teaching children not to wipe dirty hands on the furniture or to immediately wipe up any spills.
I hope this is helpful! If anyone has similar or other good care tips, I’d be very interested!

With regular, gentle cleaning, the furniture stays looking beautiful for a long time. That’s exactly what I do! And one more thing I teach my children: they shouldn’t put anything very sticky or greasy on the furniture.
Regarding water and cleaning products: if you use too much water, the surface of HEMNES pine wood can quickly swell or get stained. So really just wipe with a slightly damp cloth.
A little extra tip: if the furniture ever smells musty, wiping it down with vinegar water helps, as it naturally neutralizes odors. But, like I said, always diluted and dry immediately!
Stick with it – with a bit of care and routine, cleaning the furniture isn’t a big deal!
