Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with integrated storage and have some basic questions about the implementation. What is the best approach to arrange the modules so that the storage space is used optimally, while keeping the island stable and visually appealing? I am especially interested in tips for selecting the base cabinets, matching fronts, and the countertop, as well as how to securely fix the island to the floor without completely restricting its flexibility.

Additionally, it would be helpful to know how to make the island stable during assembly so that it doesn’t wobble or warp over time. I have seen that the Metod base cabinets can be assembled quite modularly, but islands with storage often present more complex challenges.

Does anyone have experience with such projects, especially with Ikea Metod kitchen islands, and can share the best practices or common pitfalls? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hello Sin-se, your project sounds really exciting, and I understand that you want to be well prepared because kitchen islands with integrated storage do have some specific considerations.

Regarding the construction:
- Choose base cabinets that match in height and depth. For example, Metod offers 60 cm (24 inches) deep modules that work well for islands.
- For maximum stability, I recommend assembling the carcass parts (the cabinet frames) carefully and installing the back panels fully, as they reinforce the structure.
- You should avoid securing the island to the floor if it needs to remain movable. Instead, it’s common to connect the individual modules internally using strips or brackets to prevent wobbling.
- The countertop should be fixed to the carcasses with special clamping or fastening kits. This way, the island becomes a single, stable unit.

Storage planning:
Consider which drawers or pull-outs are most practical—deep drawers are suitable for pots, while shallow ones are good for cutlery or cooking utensils.

I also often recommend toe kicks that close off the island. They protect against dust and provide additional stability.

If you want, I can also explain in more detail how to assemble and stabilize the cabinets.

I completely agree with that. I clearly remember my own project – at first, I was also unsure how to make the island truly stable. The wobbling issue was really annoying in the beginning, and honestly, I sometimes wondered if I needed professional help.

Another point I want to share with you: allow enough time for the assembly. Especially with Ikea products, you often think it will be quick, but if you want everything to fit precisely, it can take several evenings.

Sometimes I also noticed that small details, like a slightly uneven countertop, can throw off the whole feel. That’s why careful alignment is important.

If you want, I’m happy to tell you how I managed to put the island together so it feels like a single piece of furniture rather than just assembled modules.

Sin-se, to answer your questions clearly and systematically:

- Module selection: Choose standardized Metod base cabinets with identical heights, ideally with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches). For storage, use combinations of drawers and shelving units, which can be complemented with suitable inserts.

- Stability: The back panels must be fully installed; otherwise, stability will be significantly compromised. Use screws and metal brackets to connect several modules directly to each other. This increases the rigidity of the entire island.

- Worktop: Keep in mind that worktops should be mounted with an overhang and secured with appropriate fasteners. Special adhesive sets for worktops increase clamping force and prevent slipping.

- Fixing: Fixed floor anchoring is uncommon for islands since they should remain flexible. Instead, it is recommended to use adjustable feet (Metod has corresponding system feet) to compensate for uneven floors.

- Design: For an attractive appearance, the fronts should be mounted with attention to gap dimensions and front spacing. A continuous plinth completes the overall look and additionally stabilizes the construction.

Typical pitfalls include undersized back panels, lack of connections between modules, and poorly installed worktops. This summary should give you a solid foundation for assembling your kitchen island.
