KLADRAHello everyone, I am currently planning an Ikea Metod kitchen island and want to maximize storage space. My main question is: How can I build an Ikea Metod kitchen island to offer the maximum storage capacity without compromising stability or usability? I am interested both in selecting and combining cabinets as well as organizing drawers and interior fittings. Does anyone have experience with tall base cabinets or special storage solutions for Metod islands? I look forward to tips on module combinations, material thicknesses, and any necessary reinforcements. Thanks in advance!

Regular drawers are nice, but pull-outs simply offer better visibility and more space. A little tip: instead of continuous fronts, you can use drawers of varying heights – this way, you maximize storage without making it look like a warehouse. And don’t worry about stability: the Metod units are designed to support heavy loads. An additional reinforcement frame can stabilize the island well, especially if you are building a freestanding island.

Especially when storing heavy pots or pans, I recommend checking the specific load limits of the pull-outs. Also: who says that more storage space is automatically better? Too much storage often results in a loss of overview, which can lead to items being unused or forgotten. I believe a balanced approach, organizing storage based on functionality, is essential.

At first, I only thought about maximizing the number of drawers, but then I realized I also wanted space for waste sorting and a pull-out cutting board. My advice: start with a list of everything you really want to store in the island, including items you’re used to having on hand. By the way, tall cabinets with built-in inner drawers offer a great way to neatly store smaller items while still keeping them easily accessible.
Hello KLADRA, I’m happy to explain the basics for the Metod kitchen island with high storage capacity:
- First, you should use the cabinet depth of 60cm (24 inches), as it offers significantly more volume compared to 37cm (15 inches).
- For the fronts, drawers with full extension and soft-close features are especially practical.
- If you want particularly ample storage, you can also plan for toe-kick drawers or internal pull-outs.
- Make sure the modules stand on a stable base or are combined with a freestanding base panel.
It is also important to keep an eye on the weight load, for example with heavy pots. As reinforcement, you can insert wooden panels or metal elements between the cabinets if it is a freestanding island.
