Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a kitchen island with storage using the IKEA METOD system. I want to make it as practical as possible, customizing it to fit my kitchen space and needs. I am especially interested in how to best combine the individual METOD base cabinets, which drawers and shelves make sense, and how to build the island so that it is stable yet flexible.

Does anyone have experience with clever storage solutions – for example, using pull-outs with different compartments or inserts? Tips on assembly, such as the best way to connect the cabinets to each other, would also be great.

Looking forward to tips, tricks, and also potential mistakes to avoid! Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I would recommend choosing several drawer units with full extension for the Metod kitchen island. This way, you can make very good use of the storage space and have everything within easy reach. It is important to securely screw the units together and use a sufficiently strong worktop. This will ensure you are on the safe side.

Hello Gabudu,

I have just built a kitchen island using METOD myself and can provide a more detailed response:

- First, you should measure your kitchen island area precisely and plan how many base cabinets you want to place side by side. For METOD, I recommend a standard cabinet width of 60 cm (24 inches) each.

- For practical storage, drawers with built-in dividers or inserts are ideal to keep things organized. You can plan for cutlery inserts or special pan drawers, for example.

- To connect the cabinets to each other, be sure to use the supplied connectors (metal brackets or screws). These provide stability and prevent the units from drifting apart.

- The countertop should not only be secured from above but, if necessary, supported underneath with additional support panels, especially if the island stands freely.

- If you use a wooden or stone countertop, an additional plinth or reinforced legs for stability are advisable.

- A small mat or rubber pad between the cabinets and the countertop can help reduce noise.

- And don’t forget the backs or open sides to improve the overall appearance – panels or facings can help here.

If you like, I can also give you tips on tools and assembly steps.

Thank you, that sounds very helpful. Did you encounter any particular challenges when installing the cabinets, especially regarding alignment and stability? I want to avoid the cabinets wobbling later or the countertop lifting. What installation aids did you use?

Hello Gabudu,

I’m happy to help with your question. Installing the METOD units for a kitchen island is often one of the bigger DIY challenges, especially if the island is meant to be freestanding.

Basically:
- Be very precise when aligning the base cabinets: always check with a spirit level.
- Use wooden wedges or spacers to keep the cabinets level while screwing them together.
- The IKEA standard connector fittings are suitable for this, but they require some force to tighten.
- Regarding the countertop: if you have a heavy slab, adding extra support in the middle can be helpful to prevent sagging.
- You can also adjust the plinth panels to compensate for any unevenness.

One tip: allow yourself plenty of time for assembly, and take two extra check measurements before screwing anything together. This way you ensure everything fits and the island is really stable and level.

If you plan to include electrical work (e.g. power outlets), it’s best to incorporate this early in the planning stage.

For optimizing storage space: I would always prefer plain pull-outs over pull-outs with compartments. This improves visibility. The METOD drawers with soft-close are very practical.

Assemble the cabinets from the inside whenever possible and always use the supplied fittings. This ensures stability.
