Hello everyone, I have a problem that I hope someone here in the forum can help solve: What is the best way to secure IKEA Billy shelves on carpeted floors?

I understand that the traditional method of wall mounting works well on solid, dry floors, but my floor is a thick carpet, and I want to fix the shelf securely and stably without it wobbling or tipping over.

Has anyone had experience with fastening methods specifically for carpeted floors? Are there special wall anchors or other tips you can recommend? I’m looking for a safe solution that leaves as little damage as possible and isn’t too complicated. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I once had a Billy shelf on carpet, and it was a bit wobbly until I simply placed small rubber mats under the feet – it works like magic! I also attached the usual wall brackets, and now the shelf stands completely stable.

The carpet is soft, but with the non-slip mat underneath, nothing slides around – I can definitely recommend it! 🙂

One possible solution is to secure the shelf at the top to the wall using brackets and additionally place a non-slip mat under the feet. Never screw into the carpet, as that does not help.

Thanks first of all for the quick responses! I understand that the primary stability always comes from the wall mounting, and the carpet mainly causes the wobbling.

One more question: If I use the supplied wall plugs on a drywall (plasterboard) wall, is there anything special I need to consider? Which wall plugs are best suited to ensure they hold securely when used with the heavier shelf?

Yes, for drywall you should use special cavity anchors, such as metal anchors or toggle bolts that spread behind the panel. Standard plastic wall plugs often cannot support the weight of a loaded Billy shelf.

Choose anchors rated for at least 10 kg (22 lbs) or more per fixing point, and always fix with at least two brackets, preferably more depending on the height of the shelf.

Exactly! That makes all the difference. :-) I used metal screws and metal expansion anchors for the drywall, and it holds firmly. With that, the Billy shelf didn’t wobble at all, even with the first shake!

Hello! One tip if you often rearrange or move the shelf board: avoid large wall drillings in fibrous carpet flooring.

It’s better to secure it only to the wall and use small anti-slip rubber or foam rubber strips on the floor. These increase friction and prevent tipping without damaging the carpet.
