Hello everyone, I am planning to install IKEA Platsa shelves in my apartment, but I have drywall, and I am unsure how to securely fix the shelves to it. The Platsa units are quite heavy, especially when fully loaded. My question is: How can I reliably and safely attach IKEA Platsa shelves to drywall without damaging the wall or risking the shelves falling off eventually? What fastening materials and methods are best suited for this? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Metal brackets are also great because they reduce the load and you can essentially fix the shelf like a second hand.Exactly! Metal brackets make a huge difference and give you a lot of confidence. If you screw the shelves to the wall at multiple points, you'll get excellent stability. And always use several wall plugs, never just one 😉
One more tip: if you are attaching several shelf modules together, check whether IKEA offers suitable connecting hardware to better distribute the load. This makes the entire structure much more stable!
I would like to add that load limits for drywall (plasterboard) walls must be strictly observed. The weight specifications from IKEA for Platsa usually refer to ideal fastenings. If you expect heavier loads, it is advisable to install an additional support structure (e.g., a wooden frame behind the wall) or support the shelving unit from the floor. Although this may sound complicated, it greatly increases safety.
Drilling into studs is the safest method. A basic stud finder works well if there are no electrical wires or similar disturbances affecting the measurement. Test it first in a less visible spot. If you are unsure, opening a small drywall access hole can also help to accurately locate the studs.
Regarding plywood panels: if you can attach them directly to the studs, the load is really well distributed. The panels should be at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick to prevent bending. Such a back panel also looks more elegant than visible plugs or brackets.
