Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Malm bed from IKEA and noticed during assembly that it still wobbles slightly despite careful construction. I’m wondering how to assemble Malm beds so that they stand completely stable.
My main question is: Are there any specific steps, tools, or tips during assembly that I should consider to avoid this typical wobbling?
I have strictly followed the instructions and checked all screws multiple times, but the problem persists.
Perhaps the correct order of tightening or tightening the screws in certain stages also plays a role?
I’m looking forward to advice that goes beyond the obvious “tighten all screws.” Thanks in advance!

The connecting elements (for example, cam connectors) must be properly and fully engaged.I would like to question this: Are cam connectors even used in Malm beds? To my knowledge, IKEA mainly uses confirmat screws and dowels here.
In my experience, wobbling is usually caused by slight inaccuracies in the dowel holes or if the screws are not flush against the wood.
Therefore, I recommend lightly sanding the dowels before inserting them to help with fitting and to prevent the wood from splitting. Additionally, small amounts of wood glue at the joints can provide extra stability, even though this is not officially recommended by IKEA.

I agree. Thorough preparation of the joints is essential. For example, you can lightly deburr the dowels with sandpaper and check if they can be installed without force. Also, cleaning the drill holes from wood chips helps.
One last tip from me: When finally screwing everything together, check all screws a second time after the initial tightening. The structure can settle slightly during tightening, causing the screws to loosen again.

Thanks for the tips so far, very helpful!
A question for the experts:
Is it better to fully assemble a slatted bed base before putting the bed frame together, or should you first secure the main frame so it doesn't wobble and then insert the slatted base?
I’ve noticed that the assembled frame sometimes feels a bit flexible, but its stability improves once the slatted base is in place. How do you typically handle this?

Should the slatted frame be fully assembled before attaching the bed frame?Good question. I always recommend assembling and securely fastening the bed frame first. Only once the frame is completely stable should the slatted frame be installed.
The reason is that while the slatted frame can help align or reinforce the structure, it does not replace the proper joint stability of the frame. It’s better to firmly fix the framework first and then position and adjust the slatted frame afterward.
Installing the slatted frame too early risks creating stresses that could negatively affect the durability of the joints.

After assembling the frame, always double-check that all cross braces fit tightly.
Sometimes it helps to slightly tilt or press the frame to reveal any small gaps. When you then add the slatted bed base, it usually feels much more stable right away.
Don’t worry if the bed wobbles a little at first – it will become more stable over time as all screws are properly tightened.
Good luck with the assembly – and hey, the effort is worth it once the bed is finally standing 🙂
