flogauHello everyone, I am considering ways to visually modify Ikea Hemnes shelves without much effort or expensive materials. My goal is to make the typical look a bit more unique without dismantling or damaging the furniture piece significantly. I am thinking of simple adjustments such as applying films, adding new handles, or incorporating small decorative elements. It is important to me that the suggested changes are reversible or at least do not cause permanent damage. Does anyone have ideas or experience on how to visually change a HEMNES shelf with little effort? I am especially interested in creative but practical tips that can be implemented quickly and do not require extensive renovation.
Hello flogau, I find your question very interesting because the HEMNES shelves are indeed very sturdy but have a rather classic look that not everyone likes. Here are a few ideas that are easy to implement:
- Adhesive film or contact paper: One of the simplest options is to apply self-adhesive film to the back panel or the inside surfaces. Make sure the edges are neat and try to avoid bubbles.
- Washable furniture paint: This requires little effort to freshen up areas like the back panel or the shelves with a solid color, especially if you want to bring the shelf more into the center of the room.
- Replace handles: HEMNES models often come with screws for handles. You can swap these for rustic leather straps or unique metal handles. This greatly enhances the look but is easy to reverse.
- Lighting: LED strips mounted under the shelves create pleasant ambient lighting.
Common mistakes I notice include inaccurate measuring of films or using paint that is too thick and doesn’t adhere well to wood. Also, when changing handles, you should pay attention to the screw spacing to avoid installation problems.
If you only want to change the appearance of the shelf, I especially recommend highlighting the back panel or adding accents with handles and lighting. Good luck!

- New handles are really key. Why always go for boring ones? Leather straps as handles look great and are super quick to install.
- And hey, how about some pretty but affordable stick-on decorations? For example, small mirror stones or stickers in the shape of leaves or floral patterns – they add a nice touch in no time and cost almost nothing.
- For a bit of color: chalk paint is easy to apply, dries quickly, and you can sand it afterwards a little to give it a vintage look.
I think that’s great too, LED strips take any shelf to the next level. I installed something like that on my HEMNES, and it creates a nice effect, especially in the evening.
Relaxed atmosphere and a fresh look, all without any hassle!

I can easily understand that the typical white Hemnes shelves sometimes seem a bit too plain, especially after they have been in the living room for a while. You want to make changes without taking on a major effort or risking damage to the furniture.
What helped me a lot was incorporating personal favorite colors, for example on the back panels. This way, the furniture immediately gains its own character without directly touching or altering the wood.
What I especially recommend are small changes that also have an emotional impact:
- Maybe a few hooks on the side for bags or keys – functional and visible
- Or pretty small plants on one of the shelves to soften the otherwise quite clean look
These details really make the shelving feel homely and more like a unique piece of furniture, rather than something that looks the same in 50,000 other homes.
I’m definitely curious to see what you try out and how you feel about your shelf once the changes have been successful!

Hi flogau, when it comes to how to visually update Ikea HEMNES shelves with minimal effort, there are some key principles to keep in mind to ensure you enjoy the process and achieve good results:
- First, it’s important to consider the style of the room. The update should blend in harmoniously.
- The materials of the shelf also limit what you can do – HEMNES shelves are usually made of solid pine, which is easy to paint but can be sensitive to improper handling.
What specifically works without much effort:
- Self-adhesive films are perfect for backing panels or shelves. It’s important to clean the surface thoroughly and use a squeegee to smooth out the film.
- Changing the handles is a quick way to make an impact, as already suggested. Pay attention to the hole spacing, usually 128 mm (5 inches) or 96 mm (3.8 inches).
- Lighting, such as LED strips, often come with adhesive tape and can be installed directly. Ideally, use a dimmer to adjust the lighting mood.
If the shelf is against a wall, a colored background or wallpaper behind the shelf can also create a visual effect, especially if the shelf is open.
I hope this helps you further.
