Hello everyone, I have some Billy shelves from IKEA that I would like to repaint or refresh with new color. Since these shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, I am wondering what steps are necessary to ensure good adhesion of the new paint and how to proceed without causing uneven or blotchy surfaces. Are there specific primers, paints, or techniques that work particularly well? I am open to tips regarding preparation (e.g., sanding, cleaning), choice of materials (paint, spray, stain), as well as advice on drying times or protective coatings. Thanks in advance!

What steps are necessary to ensure good adhesion of the new paint?I would start by cleaning the shelf thoroughly and lightly sanding it to help the paint adhere better. Then use a primer suitable for melamine-coated surfaces – this is important. After that, you can paint with an acrylic enamel in your desired color. Don’t forget to sand lightly between coats!

Then use a primer suitable for melamine-coated surfaces – this is important.Correct, without the right primer, paint will barely adhere to melamine-coated particleboard. It is recommended to use a bonding agent specifically designed for plastic surfaces or melamine, as these slightly roughen the surface and improve paint adhesion.
Additionally, sanding with very fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320) is advisable to lightly roughen the smooth surface without causing damage. After priming, the paint should be applied in several thin layers; this prevents dripping and ensures an even finish. For outdoor use, I recommend applying a clear acrylic varnish as a protective topcoat before the final finish.
Regarding drying time: wait at least 4 hours between each layer, ideally even a full day, to increase durability.

I’ve also refreshed my Billy shelves with spray paint before – they really looked like new afterwards! It was important for me to do this outside or in a well-ventilated room; otherwise, it turns into a paint mess in the living room ;-). A bit of patience is definitely required. And if you want a custom look, spray cans with matte or glossy finishes are very convenient.
A quick tip: Use removable painter’s tape beforehand – the varnish adheres better and results in cleaner edges. Enjoy your creative makeover! 🙂

What steps are necessary to ensure good adhesion of the new paint? The question of proper preparation is crucial. However, we should consider that Billy shelves are made from very thin particleboard with a melamine surface. This limits the load-bearing capacity, and aggressive sanding or applying thick layers of paint can cause warping.
Furthermore, it is worth considering whether the desired effect would be more durable and visually appealing using paint, or perhaps with a laminate or self-adhesive vinyl film. These alternatives are also gentler on the shelf’s structure.
As a general rule, I recommend testing on an inconspicuous area beforehand to see how the surface reacts to sanding, primer, and paint.
If the choice is for paint, then it’s better to use very fine sandpaper, a special bonding primer, and apply thin layers of paint. Thick coats would likely damage the furniture piece.
