Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint some of my IKEA Hemnes furniture myself, but I want to complete the job as quickly and easily as possible. My question is: How can you paint IKEA Hemnes furniture quickly and easily without the result looking uneven or becoming prone to scratches?

I’ve heard that the surfaces have a special coating or protective film, which makes painting more difficult. What preparations are really necessary, and are there specific paints or techniques that work especially well to save time while still achieving a durable finish?

I would appreciate tips on proper preparation, the right sandpaper, paint choice, and how to apply the paint, as well as recommendations for protecting the finish afterwards. Thanks in advance for your help!

The surface of Hemnes furniture is usually coated with a clear varnish, which makes painting difficult without proper preparation. For a fast yet clean result, I recommend the following process:

- Thoroughly clean the furniture to remove grease and dirt.
- Lightly sand with fine sandpaper (about grit 180–220) to roughen the varnish, helping the new paint adhere better.
- Carefully remove all dust afterward.
- Use a bonding primer specifically designed for varnished surfaces to improve adhesion.
- Choose a water-based paint or chalk paint that dries quickly and creates a smooth finish.
- Apply with a foam roller for an even coat.
- Finish with a durable sealant (e.g., water-based clear varnish).

It’s important to follow the drying times to ensure a long-lasting result. This method offers a good balance between speed and quality.

This is exactly what made the biggest difference for me! Just keep at it and don’t skip the preparation! 🎨

And here’s another tip from me: use chalk paint – it dries very quickly, creates a great finish, and hardly needs any sealing.

I was surprised how nice and straightforward the result was, even though I had no professional experience. So go for it, it’s really fun, and the furniture looks like new afterward – or even better! 😃

I totally understand wanting to keep it quick and simple – I’ve painted Hemnes myself, and it’s really not complicated, but a few things help:

Preparation is key, but you don’t need to sand for hours. I just lightly roughened the surface with a fine sanding block, just enough to help the new paint adhere better. It’s also important to completely remove the dust after sanding, otherwise nothing will stick properly.

Regarding the paint: Chalk paint is great because it dries really quickly and is easy to work with. I applied it directly with a brush instead of rolling, which gives more control and saves time. After that, I sealed it with wax to keep the surface durable.

If you’re still unsure about durability: the combination of light sanding, chalk paint, and sealing is a good compromise between saving time and maintaining quality. Good luck!
