Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Pax wardrobe system from IKEA and would like to retrofit the drawers with soft-close mechanisms to prevent slamming and make operation more comfortable. Currently, my drawers do not have built-in dampers, which not only affects usability but could also impact the long-term stability of the cabinet structure.

My question is: What options are available to retrofit Pax drawers with soft-close dampers? I am particularly interested in the following points:

- Are there original IKEA replacement parts or certified compatible soft-close systems that can be easily retrofitted?
- Which installation methods are practical when the furniture is already assembled and filled with contents?
- What should be considered to ensure both the functionality and safety of the drawers?

If anyone has practical experience retrofitting damping components in Pax drawers or knows of alternative solutions, I would appreciate a detailed explanation.

Thank you in advance!

For PAX drawers, IKEA offers an original soft-closing damper kit for retrofitting; however, it is not easy to install on every model since some drawer types are not compatible without removal.

If the original kit is not an option, there are high-quality alternative dampers available that can be attached to the drawer slides using screws. Important points are:

- The dampers must fit the drawer width
- The mounting should be secure and must not reduce the drawer’s load capacity
- Ideally, dampers that can be mounted directly on the runner without removing the drawer are best

It is usually easiest to briefly remove the drawer, install the dampers, and then reinstall everything. Also, follow instructions carefully to ensure the dampers are aligned properly for the soft-close function to work effectively.

From a safety standpoint, make sure no loose parts remain that could cause pinching hazards.

In summary:
- Prefer the original soft-closing damper kit
- Alternatively, look for compatible aftermarket dampers
- Installation is usually done with the drawer removed
- Check for stability and safety

If you want, I can provide the IKEA item numbers and detailed installation steps.

That’s exactly how I do it as well.

Order original dampers from IKEA, remove the drawers, attach the dampers, and reinsert the drawers. This method works reliably and is reasonably priced.

Retrofitting can also work when the furniture is installed, provided you have enough space to fully pull out the drawers.

This is how I usually do it:
- Pull the drawer completely out and, if possible, detach it from the slide system
- Attach the dampers to the sides of the slides, usually using screws or clips
- Reinsert the drawer and test the function

If you cannot remove all the drawers, use small, flat screwdrivers and suitable screws to install dampers in hard-to-reach places.

It is important to work evenly to avoid leaving any drawer undamped. Also, make sure that the dampers do not reduce the drawer depth or affect its load capacity.

One more tip: small aids like magnetic clips or temporary adhesive tape can help position the dampers correctly while fastening them.

If you have further questions about fastening, feel free to ask.
