Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my Billy shelves from Ikea, specifically the doors. Unfortunately, they are quite loud when closing and feel a bit stiff, almost as if they are rubbing somewhere or hitting the stops too hard. My goal is to make the doors quieter and smoother without having to alter the entire structure. I’ve read that lubricating the hinges might help, but I’m concerned that this might not be enough or the best solution. What options do you know for better adjusting the Billy doors, installing soft-close mechanisms, or generally improving the noise and movement? Are there any experiences with certain products or tips that really work? Thanks for your advice!
I can definitely understand how annoying the noise when closing the door can be. In my case, the combination of adjusting the doors and a small investment in soft-close hinges made a significant improvement.
Adding felt tape to the contact surfaces also helped make the sound noticeably more pleasant.
I also think those are very clever because they are hardly visible but still effectively dampen the noise. If you’re unsure, you can try simulating the effect first with tape to see if you like it. :-)

I used these small transparent silicone stoppers that simply compress when the door closes

I believe this topic should be considered not only from a technical perspective but also in terms of cost. Sometimes, the effort required to improve inexpensive furniture is not worth it, as the time and material costs exceed the value.
This is certainly the most durable solution, but Ikea cabinets follow a specific standard – so replacing hinges often also requires minor adjustments to the furniture itself, which not everyone wants or is able to do.
For me, the most practical approach is a combination of felt or silicone pads plus occasional readjustments. Those who want more may prefer to invest directly in higher-quality cabinets.

Hello USSAR, I would like to add that making Billy doors quieter and smoother works well with relatively simple means if you proceed systematically.
1. Adjust the doors precisely – I recommend slightly loosening all hinge screws and then aligning the doors vertically and parallel to the shelf. This can minimize friction and scraping noise.
2. Lubricate the hinges, preferably with silicone spray or a special furniture oil. Avoid using WD-40, as it can dissolve lubricant layers.
3. Attach soft buffers at contact points – felt pads or silicone bumpers work well for this. They prevent doors from slamming shut.
4. If possible, replace standard hinges with soft-close versions, which are also available from third-party suppliers that fit Billy.
I suggest trying each step individually to see how the door performance improves. With a little patience, you can achieve a noticeable difference.
