Hello everyone,

I am currently working on customizing some IKEA Malm furniture to make it more personal and unique. I am particularly interested in different techniques, such as painting, applying adhesives, redesigning the fronts, or adding LED lighting. My question is: How can Malm furniture be customized effectively? Which methods have proven successful, and what should be especially considered regarding the materials to ensure the result is both stable and durable, but also as creative and visually appealing as possible?

I am grateful for any tips, including specific ideas or personal experiences! I am especially interested in unconventional approaches beyond simple paint jobs—something more unusual and original.

Hey praix, it’s great that you want to creatively update the Malm furniture! 🙂

I’ve painted several chests of drawers myself with chalk paint, which gives a nice matte vintage look. After it dries, you can gently sand the edges to create a worn, distressed effect. Then add some nice new handles, and the piece looks like new!

Another great method is covering the surface with self-adhesive vinyl – there are so many exciting patterns, from wood grain to marble effects. The key is to clean the surface thoroughly beforehand and make sure it’s perfectly smooth, so the vinyl doesn’t form bubbles.

And for those who like lighting: LED strips placed on the back or underneath the drawers create really cool accents. I did this myself and am very happy with the result! So just be adventurous and give it a try, it’s definitely worth it! :-)

Hello praix,

to approach your question from a more technical perspective: Malm furniture is mostly made of wood-based panels with a melamine coating. This means that painting directly on the surface without proper preparation does not adhere well, as the surface is very smooth and has low absorbency.

I therefore recommend the following steps for a durable and high-quality transformation:

1. Thoroughly clean the furniture using a grease-dissolving cleaner.
2. Then use fine sandpaper (grit 120 to 180) to roughen the surface slightly without damaging the melamine coating too much.
3. Apply a special bonding primer, such as an acrylic or epoxy primer, designed for smooth surfaces.
4. You can then paint with acrylic paint or chalk paint; the latter usually requires a sealing topcoat.

When applying adhesive films, pay special attention to the edges, as these can easily come loose. A tip: bevel the edges of the wood panels slightly so that the film adheres better and does not lift.

Additionally, you can incorporate other creative ideas, such as replacing individual handles with designer pieces, installing decorative moldings or profiles, or adding lighting – I recommend flexible LED strips with separate power supply for this.

I’m also curious about the intended function of your modified Malm furniture (e.g. storage, TV stand, bedside table)? This could influence the type of transformation.

Good luck!

Hello praix,

First of all, I think it’s very sensible that you are specifically asking about the best methods.

In my opinion, it is important to respect the material properties of Malm furniture.

This means:

- Before you work with varnish or paint, the surface needs to be very well prepared. Sanding with fairly fine sandpaper (at least grit 180) is often enough to reduce the smoothness slightly.
- It’s best to use a primer designed specifically for melamine. For example, acrylic-based adhesion primers create a very good bond.
- When painting or varnishing, I prefer water-based paints that are applied thinly to avoid cracking.
- If you use films or foils, you should pay attention to their abrasion resistance and press the adhesive sides down very thoroughly.

Additionally, I have had good experiences attaching black or white metal frames to the edges to give the furniture a modern, industrial look.

Even simple changes like replacing handles, adding casters, or adding storage boxes can create a noticeable difference.

What do you think about trying a combination of several techniques? For example, covering one side with foil, painting the fronts, and using different handles can look quite interesting. 🙂
