Hello everyone,
I have several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA, mostly in white or birch, and I’m looking for ways to visually enhance them. I’m less interested in a complete makeover and more in making them look a bit more individual and modern with manageable effort and without requiring advanced DIY skills.
Do you have any tips or experiences on how to refresh MALM furniture without having to buy brand-new pieces? For example, ideas for paint, handles, adhesive films, or small details that can make a big difference? I’m looking forward to your suggestions and also your thoughts on the pros and cons of each method!

Adhesive films generally stick well to melamine surfaces, provided the area is clean and free of grease. It is important to lightly roughen the surface with sandpaper (e.g., grit 180) before applying the film to improve adhesion.
Regarding sanding: You don’t need to sand down to the bare wood, just lightly roughen the surface. For a piece of furniture like Malm, this usually takes about 1-2 hours, depending on how many sides you are working on.
You can prime with a bonding agent to increase durability, but this is not mandatory if you use high-quality films.

1. How well do adhesive films stick to melamine? Is there a particular type of film you would recommend? The adhesion is quite good with high-quality, self-adhesive vinyl films.

2. How much effort is it roughly to sand and prime the furniture beforehand? If you only sand lightly (roughening the surface slightly without completely removing the paint), the work effort is significantly reduced. You can apply primer together with paint or an adhesion promoter in one step if you are painting.
Basically, stick to products that are explicitly designed for furniture and use intermediate sanding.
If you want to save time, film application is usually faster than painting.
One more tip if you are using foil: Sometimes it helps to gently warm the foil with a hairdryer, which makes it more flexible, especially at the edges. This allows you to better avoid unwanted wrinkles and bubbles.
And in general: Patience during installation leads to a much better result, even with foil.
