Hello everyone, I want to equip my Ikea Platsa shelving unit with suitable LED lighting and am looking for good ideas and proven solutions. Specifically, I am interested in which type of LED lighting works best, how to install the LEDs without affecting the appearance or functionality of the shelf, and which power supply is the most convenient. It would also be helpful to know how to route or hide cables neatly, which sensors (e.g., motion detectors) can be integrated effectively, and how complex such a project generally is. I have a PLATSA shelving unit measuring approximately 120 x 60 x 40 cm (47 x 24 x 16 inches). I’m mainly interested in achieving even illumination inside the compartments, and possibly some ambient lighting around the exterior of the unit. Has anyone done something like this or knows useful tips? Thanks in advance for your help!

For PLATSA, I recommend 12V RGB LED strips, which you can attach inside with 3M adhesive tape. Use a separate 12V power supply—ideally placed close to the shelving unit. You can route the cables through the holes at the back, so they are hardly visible.

Hello Ekrembla! Your request makes sense, as the PLATSA shelf’s modular design provides ideal conditions for flexible LED lighting. I would recommend choosing warm white LEDs, as this creates a natural and pleasant atmosphere.

Regarding installation, there are several options: most people use self-adhesive LED strips, which you can easily attach to the inner edges of the shelf. Make sure the surface is clean and dry for the strips to adhere well. Alternatively, LED spotlights or small LED bars can be fixed with screws if you prefer a more stable setup.

Concerning power supply: 12V power adapters are common and safe to use. You can hide the cables in the back panels or gaps between units.

For convenience, I suggest motion sensors that can be discreetly installed, for example on the inside of the top shelf section. These sensors automatically turn on the light when you open the shelf or come close – very practical!

My tip: install everything temporarily first and test the brightness before securing the cables.

If you have questions about individual components or wiring advice, feel free to ask.

That’s a great idea! Especially with PLATSA, motion sensors are very practical because they only turn on the LED lights when needed, saving energy and adding convenience. I also attached LEDs behind the back panel and gathered the cables there. You can, for example, make a small cutout in the back panel to neatly route the power cables through.

I have had good experience with USB LED strips. You can connect them directly to a power bank or a USB outlet. This is sufficient for simple applications. They are attached with adhesive backing, and you can route the cable through the back panel. I don’t use motion sensors, but for quick lighting this is more than enough.
