ᐅ How can soft-close mechanisms be added to Ikea Pax wardrobe doors?

jedojoHello everyone, I am considering retrofitting damping systems to the doors of my Ikea PAX wardrobe because they close quite loudly and somewhat harshly. My specific question is: What practical methods are available to equip existing PAX doors with a damping system without having to completely replace the hinges or doors? Are there any recommended retrofit kits or DIY solutions that work well and are easy to install? I am particularly interested in durable but affordable options that are compatible with the original PAX fittings. Replaceable magnetic dampers, springs, or silicone buffers – what has proven effective? Any tips on installation and possible limitations would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your experience and recommendations!
Basically, there are two options to retrofit soft-closing mechanisms for Ikea PAX doors: 1) Installing soft-close hinges to replace the existing hinges, if they are not already installed. 2) Adding small damping elements that are mounted inside the cabinet or on the frame.
Switching to soft-close hinges is the cleanest solution but requires completely replacing the hinges. This is often the most expensive and labor-intensive approach.
If you want to keep the original hinges, alternative dampers are available in "inset or clip-on types" that can be attached with screws or adhesive in the right spot. These cushion the door closing and prevent loud banging.
Examples include small hydraulic dampers or rubber buffers with springs. It is important to carefully adjust the mounting position so the damping is effective and the doors don’t stick.
I recommend choosing retrofit kits with drilling templates, as this makes installation easier and avoids damage. A simple alternative is thumb-sized self-adhesive silicone pads, although these do not provide real damping, rather just protection against loud impacts.

These cushions the door strike and thus prevent loud slamming. That’s exactly the point. I have started installing small hydraulic dampers on the frames myself. They cost around 15 Euros each, are easy to screw in, and have been working perfectly for months.
Magnetic dampers are also an option, but I prefer the mechanical ones because they are less prone to wear.

I initially replaced the hinges myself, but that was quite a bit of work. Instead, I attached small silicone dampers inside the frame. It reduces the noise somewhat, but the door doesn't close completely softly.
If you decide to go with soft-close hinges, be aware that installing them on PAX doors often requires precise adjustment for them to work properly. I hope this helps you with your decision!

Switching to soft-close hinges is the cleanest solution but requires completely replacing the hinges. That's true, I would like to add: If you choose soft-close hinges, you should pay close attention to the series and compatibility with PAX. Ikea itself offers corresponding hinges, but compatible models from third-party manufacturers also fit.
Often, the effort and cost are higher than with simple dampers, but the effect is significantly better. For medium to large PAX doors, I can only recommend investing in original soft-close technology because durability and functionality are better.
One more tip for installation: Pre-drill screws into a test piece first, as the doors are made of particleboard with veneer and can easily tear out. Otherwise, there is a risk of damage.
