Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify my Ikea Pax wardrobe to store various sports equipment in an organized and space-saving way. The items I want to store range from dumbbells and weight plates to yoga mats, as well as some smaller resistance bands and boxing gloves. I am especially looking for practical modifications or additions that can be implemented within the Pax system, such as special shelves, mounts, pull-out elements, or hanging options.

How can the Ikea Pax be best adapted for storing sports equipment? Are there proven modifications or creative solutions that optimize storage space while keeping the items easily accessible? I look forward to your experiences, tips, or warnings if certain approaches are not suitable. Thanks in advance!

I would avoid fixed shelves and instead choose flexible storage systems. For example, dumbbells can be hung on hooks or wall mounts installed inside the Pax. Removable boxes from the cabinet are useful for small equipment. Foam inserts protect the devices and prevent them from slipping.

I would like to share a structured approach for converting the Ikea Pax wardrobe for sports equipment storage:

- Planning: Start by making a list of the equipment sizes and weights. It is important to store the heaviest items as low as possible.

- Shelves: Instead of the standard boards, I use sturdy, thicker wooden panels that can support more weight. Adjustable height is essential.

- Dumbbells and weight plates: It’s best to mount them on special holders, such as pipe clamps or self-drilling hooks attached to the side walls. This helps keep things organized.

- Yoga mats: Rolled mats can be stored perfectly on horizontally mounted telescopic rods near the top. This prevents them from being constantly compressed.

- Resistance bands and gloves: I recommend small boxes or baskets that can be removed; stackable plastic boxes work well.

- Inside of the doors: The backs of the doors are great for small hooks or holders to hang items like jump ropes or hand trainers.

Common mistakes include insufficient shelf stability and storage space that is too tight, which can damage equipment. My advice: allow some extra space because sports gear needs room to breathe!

Exactly. Placing heavy items on standard Pax shelves is not a good idea. They bend easily. Also, storing things too tightly causes wear on the equipment and makes access difficult.

In addition to the ideas mentioned so far, I would like to add the following points for adapting the Ikea Pax system to store sports equipment:

- Load capacity: Standard Pax units are designed for clothing. For heavy sports gear, be sure to use sturdy drawer slides and reinforced shelves, or install additional support structures.

- Modularity: Take advantage of the flexible Pax system. Pull-out drawers or baskets make handling smaller items much easier.

- Ventilation: Closed systems like Pax can lead to moisture buildup, especially with towels or boxing gloves. It is advisable to integrate door vents or moisture-regulating inserts.

- Space planning: Consider everyday flow. Equipment should be stored so it can be removed and put back quickly without having to empty the entire wardrobe.

- Safety: If there are items with sharp edges or points (e.g. javelins, sticks), I recommend padded interiors or protective covers.

These aspects should be considered during a conversion to ensure functional, durable, and safe storage.
