Years ago, I bought an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture – specifically a chest of drawers – and although I have taken good care of it, it now looks somewhat worn. I would like to know how to make the IKEA Hemnes look like new again after years of use. What maintenance methods, repair techniques, or possibly special cleaning products are recommended to refresh the surface and wood texture? Are there any preventive measures that can help protect the furniture from aging faster? I appreciate any explanations and tips, as I want to preserve the piece as long as possible and avoid having to replace it.

I would like to add that ventilation and humidity levels in the room are important. Excessive moisture can cause swelling, while an overly dry climate makes wood brittle. An ideal humidity level is around 45-55%.

Simply dust regularly and use furniture polish when needed. It protects against drying out and dirt.

Thank you very much for the diverse tips! In summary, I have decided on the following approach for myself:

1. Regularly remove deposits and dust with a soft cloth
2. Lightly sand the surface every few years (grit 220) and touch up with a suitable acrylic lacquer
3. Avoid direct sunlight exposure
4. Use protective measures such as coasters
5. Monitor humidity levels

If I have any further questions, I will get back here.

Glad to help! Also, keep in mind: if you want to use wood glue or wood filler for small repairs, be sure to use matching colors and finishes so the repair blends in visually.

After 5 years, I have occasionally used furniture wax on my Hemnes dresser; it works well against minor scratches. Simply apply a thin layer and polish.
