Hello everyone,
I recently purchased several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, especially dressers and sideboards. I like the classic look, but I would like to customize them with a fabric covering to add more warmth and texture to the living space. My question is: How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be upholstered with fabric without compromising the stability or functionality of the pieces? Are there specific techniques, materials, or tools that have proven effective? I am looking for practical and long-lasting solutions, ideally without requiring extensive carpentry equipment.
Thanks for your tips and experiences!

Basically, upholstering IKEA Hemnes furniture with fabric is not complicated but requires careful preparation. Hemnes furniture is usually made of solid pine wood with a lacquered surface, which can make adhesive bonding more difficult.
- First, the surface should be lightly sanded to ensure better adhesion.
- For attaching the fabric, specialized furniture adhesives or hot glue guns are suitable, depending on whether the fabric is thicker or thinner.
- Alternatively, decorative upholstery tacks or nails can be used to secure the fabric along the edges.
- If the surface is too uneven, it is advisable to use a layer of foam padding underneath, which is then covered with the fabric.
It is important not to alter the furniture pieces too much, especially in functional areas, so that drawers and doors continue to close properly. For long-lasting results, I recommend using specialized upholstery fabrics that are durable and washable.
If anyone needs additional details, I am happy to provide more information.

Regarding your question: "How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be upholstered with fabric without compromising the stability or functionality of the furniture?"
I have lightly upholstered Hemnes dressers at home, mainly on the fronts. My approach:
- First, I removed the fronts and sanded the surface so the fabric would adhere better.
- Then I applied a thin layer of spray adhesive to the wooden surface, which works well for lighter fabrics.
- I stretched the fabric tightly and secured the excess edges on the backside with a staple gun.
- For the corners, it is advisable to carefully fold the fabric and fix it with the staple gun to achieve clean edges.
Important: I made sure that the drawers still open and close smoothly and that everything was neatly finished to avoid later damage or warping.
If you have questions about the materials or specific types of fabric, I’m happy to share more.

Then a thin layer of spray adhesive was applied to the wood surface; this works well for fabrics that are not too heavy. This is an important point that I can confirm. Spray adhesive has the advantage of creating a uniform and thin bonding layer, which works best with Hemnes furniture due to its light finish. It is important to apply the adhesive in well-ventilated areas and to attach the fabric quickly before the adhesive dries too much.
Additionally, for thicker or textured fabrics, I recommend double fastening—using adhesive plus upholstery nails or a fine tack set—to prevent detachment later on.
As a tip: use solvent-free adhesives to avoid damaging the surface or causing strong odors indoors.
This way, you achieve a sturdy bond with an attractive appearance.
I find it really exciting how you describe everything! I personally experimented roughly with upholstery fabric on my Hemnes dresser, and it makes a big impact, giving the furniture a very stylish look!
What I also want to say: Don’t be afraid of mistakes! If you dare to try, you can achieve amazing transformations. My tip:
- Choose fabrics that you really like, for example linen or velvet.
- Start with a small area for testing.
- Use spray adhesive AND upholstery tacking nails, as Gino38 suggests.
This will make your home much cozier! Give it a try — it’s really fun, and the result is a beautiful eye-catcher! Good luck and happy crafting! 🙂
