Hello everyone, I’m currently looking into how Ikea Hemnes furniture can be optimized specifically for small hallways. The Hemnes series is generally quite solid and sturdy, which can often be a challenge for narrow, confined entrance areas. I’m especially interested in ways to modify or complement the furniture so that the available space is used as efficiently as possible without making the hallway feel cramped. Adjustments in depth or height might be helpful, as well as multifunctionality or clever storage solutions. What ideas or experiences do you have to make Hemnes products more user-friendly and space-saving for small hallways? Looking forward to your suggestions!

My hallway is about 120 cm (47 inches) wide and just under 250 cm (98 inches) long.

Thanks for the measurements! That’s a good basis to work with.

In a hallway that is 120 cm (47 inches) wide, the depth available for furniture is limited to about 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) if you want to keep a clear walking space of at least 80 cm (31 inches). For example:

- Reduce a shoe cabinet to 35 cm (14 inches) depth
- Use a storage bench no deeper than 30–35 cm (12–14 inches)
- Mount a slim wall shelf 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) deep as a raised surface

It’s important to avoid bulky furniture elements. Instead of hinged doors, I recommend sliding doors or even open compartments, so that furniture pieces like those from Hemnes can fit the hallway without interfering with door movement.

I would also suggest checking how well the furniture colors match the hallway; light tones and mirrors in the entry area can help create a feeling of more space.

If you like, we can work on a detailed room layout with your furniture. I’d also be interested to hear about the lighting conditions in your hallway.
