Hello everyone,

I am about to move and want to dismantle my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets as safely as possible without causing any damage. Since I already encountered some special features during assembly, I am now wondering about the best way to take the cabinets apart without damaging the connections or screws. Are there specific tools, sequences, or tips I should definitely be aware of? I am especially interested in how to carefully remove the hinges, the snap-fit system, and the panels so that I can easily reassemble the cabinets at the new location. Does anyone have experience with safely dismantling Metod systems during moves? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Hello danle,

I completely understand your concern, as disassembling IKEA Metod cabinets during a move can be quite tricky. Generally, I recommend approaching it systematically and step by step:

- First, remove all shelves and drawers completely. This helps prevent damage and makes handling easier.
- Next, take off the doors. These are usually attached with clip hinges that can be carefully released by lifting a small lever. Often, a special opening tool can be used, but a thin screwdriver works just as well.
- Finally, detach the panels such as trims and baseboards, as these often fit into grooves on the bottom or sides.
- Important: Do not unscrew bolts too forcefully; loosen them slowly to avoid ripping the material.
- Be sure to note which screws belong where—it's best to collect and sort the screws in small bags.

Do you have specialized tools like a cordless screwdriver with torque control? That makes reassembly much easier.

If needed, I can also provide a short list of the typical screw types and their locations.

Hello danle,

I would like to address your question in more detail, as there are several technical aspects that are crucial when dismantling IKEA Metod cabinets to avoid damage.

First of all, it is advisable to document the entire cabinet beforehand – photos can be helpful, but in your case, where you already have experience, this might be less necessary.

Important points for disassembly:

- Hinges: The Metod hinges mostly feature a click mechanism but are also screwed in. Generally, you turn a side screw to unlock, then carefully detach the door by lifting the hinge plate off the mounting bracket on the cabinet carcass. Avoid excessive force, as plastic clips can easily break.

- Cabinet side panels are often connected using dowels and cam lock fittings (round dowels and cam locks). It is recommended to carefully turn the cam lock holes about 90 degrees with a suitable Allen key to unlock the connections. For the dowels, gently try to pull the carcass parts apart – if there is resistance, light taps with a rubber mallet on the side can help.

- Clip connections: Some panels and trims use clips that can be detached fairly easily if pried correctly. Use a flat wooden wedge or plastic spatula here to avoid damage.

- Screws & structure: Be careful not to under-tighten or over-tighten screws; finding the correct torque is important. More precise tools, like a torque wrench with the appropriate bit, are always recommended for delicate furniture.

A question regarding your project: Are the cabinets already firmly installed (for example, screwed to walls)? This can make the disassembly process more complex, as detaching them from the wall usually comes first.

I hope these tips help you. If you like, I can also give you some advice on how to package the cabinets properly for transport after disassembly.

That exactly made me nervous the first time I moved – those hinges seem so fragile. I was afraid of breaking something, especially the click connections. A tip from my own experience: take your time and make small marks at the connection points, so it’s easier to see how everything fits back together during reassembly.

That advice is invaluable. I once got frustrated because I put too much strain on an edge of a cabinet side – that caused a small routed-out part to get damaged, which couldn’t be repaired. So really, take your time and be careful. If you have someone to help, use two people for wide cabinet parts to prevent twisting.

One more tip: if possible, keep the original user manual or at least the assembly instructions on hand. They often include details about the connections that help on site.

I wish you good luck and hope everything goes well!

Small addition:

- Set the cordless drill to low torque.
- Remove doors first.
- Collect fittings in small bags and label them.
- Avoid using metal levers; use a plastic spatula instead.

This helps prevent scratches and material damage.
