Hello everyone,

I recently bought the BILLY cabinet from IKEA and am currently a bit frustrated with the doors. They sometimes close quite loudly and aren’t as smooth to operate as I would like. I would like to know what options are available to make the BILLY doors quieter and easier to open and close.

It’s important to me that the solution doesn’t require too much effort or specialized tools—ideally something that can be done easily with basic means. Tips on maintaining the hinge materials or recommended lubricants would also be great.

Has anyone experienced this issue and can offer recommendations or even detailed instructions? Thanks in advance for the advice!

It’s great that you’re tackling this issue! 🙂

I had the same problem with my BILLY doors and can only recommend thoroughly cleaning the hinges first. Dust and dirt often build up, making the movement stiff and noisy. After that, a little silicone spray or WD-40 helps – but use it very sparingly and avoid the wooden surfaces! This makes the doors much easier to move and significantly quieter.

Another helpful tip: you can replace or add door stops, those small rubber bumpers. They really reduce the slamming noise.

Good luck, you’ve got this! 🙂

Hello Sean6,

to make the doors of BILLY quiet and smooth, I like to follow a very systematic approach. First of all, it’s important to understand that BILLY uses standard hinges without built-in soft-close mechanisms. Therefore, the noises mainly come from impact when closing and friction within the hinges.

Step 1: Cleaning. Use a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent to remove all visible dirt, especially around the hinges. Then dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Lubrication. Silicone spray is ideal because it doesn’t become sticky and does not damage wood or paint. WD-40 can also be used, but apply it sparingly and carefully. Apply the lubricant only around the hinges and open and close the door several times so it distributes evenly.

Step 3: Replace or retrofit damping pads. IKEA offers suitable replacement parts, and sometimes commercially available rubber bumpers or felt pads applied to the inside of the doors or the cabinet frame help to cushion the impact and reduce noise.

Two more tips:
- Avoid oils that can damage wood or paint.
- Check if the door is properly aligned, as a misaligned door causes more friction and noise.

I hope this helps you! If you want, I can also look into which specific dampers are available.

Exactly. Additionally, check the screws as they are often loose – this can cause doors to creak. Tightening them usually leads to noticeable improvement.

Hello Sean6,

I would like to add a few points to your thoughts on how to make BILLY doors quieter and easier to operate.

First of all, it is important to regularly maintain the door hinges by cleaning and lubricating them, as already mentioned. A dry lubricant like graphite powder or silicone spray is especially helpful. Oils can mix with dust and tend to stick over time.

Furthermore, the issue could be door alignment: if the doors hang unevenly, they create more friction. The hinges on BILLY doors are adjustable. You can make adjustments on the side where the hinges are attached. Try adjusting the doors both horizontally and vertically so that they close well without sticking or making noise.

One more tip: if your doors rub or scrape on an edge, smoothing the rubbed area lightly with very fine sandpaper can help, but be careful not to make it visible.

In summary: clean, lubricate, adjust, and if needed, add small dampers or felt pads. This should lead to a significant improvement.

If you want more detailed instructions on how to adjust the doors, just let me know!
