ᐅ How can I make Malm drawers less loose/sloppy?

Hello everyone,

I have relatively new IKEA Malm drawers and have noticed that over time they become a bit "loose," meaning they no longer fit tightly and sometimes wobble or don’t slide as smoothly in the runners as they did initially.

I’m interested in how I can tighten or firm up these Malm drawers myself without having to completely disassemble the drawer or the cabinet. Are there ways, for example, to tighten screws or special tricks to adjust the drawer slides or runners?

Has anyone experienced this issue and can share practical tips on how to restore the drawers to good condition?

I’m looking forward to your knowledgeable responses!

Just to add:

Sometimes reducing a bit of play helps when the drawer does not sit firmly against the cabinet carcass. This can be solved by placing a thin strip of foam rubber on the sidewalls of the drawer.

This way, the drawer gains a better grip without requiring major adjustments.

And yes, sometimes there is a slight creaking noise when I pull out the drawer.

Creaking often means there is some friction caused by dryness or small foreign particles. Silicone spray can help, but use it sparingly! Apart from technical gadgets, a little spray usually works wonders.

Also, if you push the drawer in and out with a bit of pressure and it wobbles slightly, it’s possible that one side of the runner is slightly bent. You can carefully straighten it with pliers, but do it slowly and check continuously.

Your drawers aren’t the only ones that develop a mind of their own – we’ve all experienced this with the Malm pieces 🙂

we all know the Malm parts 🙂

True! I’ve experienced that too.
When the drawers become really loose, I completely removed them, cleaned everything, carefully checked the small rollers on the sides, and sometimes the little plastic stoppers at the back were broken.

If the drawers don’t stay in place, definitely also check if the bottom track might be loose. I tend to forget that, but it’s often the cause.

Overall: you can fix a lot yourself without being a tool expert. Silicone spray and checking the screws are valuable first-aid measures 🙂.
