Hello everyone, I have a rather specific problem: My Billy shelves from Ikea are placed on very smooth floor surfaces (for example, tiles and laminate). I have noticed that they tend to wobble and are not properly stable, especially when lightly bumped or when opening the doors. Therefore, my question is: What practical and sustainable methods do you know to make Billy shelves stable and secure on smooth floors so that they neither tip over nor slide? The solution should be easy to implement and leave no permanent marks, as I live in a rental apartment.

Sometimes it helps to fix the shelves to the wall, even if you are renting – simply using the supplied wall plugs. This makes the furniture feel much more stable and gives you more peace of mind.
Hello Klafa, your concern is very understandable, as many Billy shelves tend to have stability issues on smooth floors. Besides the felt pads already mentioned, there are other options. For example, you can place rubber or wooden furniture wedges under the front leg of the shelf to compensate for minor unevenness and prevent wobbling. Some people also use non-slip mats under the legs. Another idea is to use self-adhesive rubber pads that stop the shelf from sliding. It is also important to screw the shelves firmly to the wall through the back panel – this greatly improves stability. Especially in rental apartments, it makes sense to use solutions that can be removed without leaving any residue. If you like, I can gladly provide some suppliers or additional tips.
I actually think this topic is not as dry as it sounds! 😄 I used to struggle with unstable furniture on smooth floors too – so I just stuck small rubber feet underneath. They act like a super grip for the feet and really stop the sliding. I also once used non-slip mats meant for carpets, placing a thin layer between the shelf and the floor – a super effective trick! And yes, securing furniture firmly to the wall is a classic solution, but sometimes you want something without drilling holes ;-) The best approach is to experiment a bit with rubber gliders and small wedges. Have fun tinkering! 🙂
This is great—so many tips coming together here! 🙂 I love my Billy shelves and also needed to do something to make them more stable. For anyone who doesn’t want to drill, I recommend self-adhesive rubber pads, like those from “MöbelFix.” They’re very easy to apply and stick really well to smooth tiles. A little tip from me: if you have several shelves side by side, connect them with strong corner brackets so they form a single unit – this makes them much more stable!
