ᐅ How can I stabilize Billy shelves on smooth floors?

Hello everyone, I have a rather specific problem: My Billy shelves from Ikea are placed on very smooth floor surfaces (for example, tiles and laminate). I have noticed that they tend to wobble and are not properly stable, especially when lightly bumped or when opening the doors. Therefore, my question is: What practical and sustainable methods do you know to make Billy shelves stable and secure on smooth floors so that they neither tip over nor slide? The solution should be easy to implement and leave no permanent marks, as I live in a rental apartment.

Just a quick question: Has anyone tried mounting the Billy shelves using the supplied wall fixings without drilling? Is there maybe a system with adhesive pads or something similar?

Hello, the official IKEA wall mounting system for Billy relies on anchors and screws because the shelf needs a secure attachment. While there are damage-free adhesive systems available, in my experience they are not always strong enough for large shelves. I would not recommend relying solely on these fixings without screws, as safety cannot be guaranteed.

I agree! Especially if you’re worried about something tipping over, I prefer a secure fixing. If you don’t want to drill, I would rather use a combination of felt pads, non-slip mats, and possibly wedges.

My recommendation: If wobbling is the main issue, try self-adhesive rubber pads with strong adhesion. They also absorb slight movements and prevent slipping on tiles. Alternatively, you can install small plastic feet with screw threads under each shelf leg; these are height-adjustable, allowing you to compensate for unevenness and align the shelf on the smooth floor.
