Hello everyone, I am looking for effective and practical tips on how to make IKEA BILLY shelves childproof and more stable. My main concern is securing the shelves against tipping over, as my children are very lively and I want to prevent any accidents. Additionally, I am interested in recommendations for specific anchors or fastening materials suitable for wall mounting that do not cause significant damage to the wall. Perhaps you also have tips for securing the shelves to prevent small items from falling out or to keep children from getting hurt. Thank you in advance for your help and shared experiences!

Hello Partanner, I know exactly how you feel! It was a big issue for us as well, especially while our children were still young. Regarding stabilization, I can only recommend securing the BILLY shelves with the supplied wall anchors. However, be careful: with drywall (plasterboard) walls, you need special anchors; otherwise, they won’t hold properly.

About your question on child safety: we arranged the shelves so that lighter or less hazardous items are stored at the bottom. Additionally, we used transparent door or drawer locks in case you install doors on the shelves.

That’s the most important point because the shelf can become quite dangerous if it wobbles. Another tip: avoid overloading shelves too high, especially at the top. Adding more weight toward the bottom increases stability. I completely understand your caution; this issue should not be underestimated. Sometimes it also makes sense to secure the shelves on the sides with small brackets to the wall, in case the main anchors are not sufficient.

Hi, I think this topic is really important, but it can also be stressful sometimes when the little ones are constantly getting into things 🙂 I secured my BILLY shelves against tipping over using furniture safety straps from the DIY store – these flexible straps can be mounted fairly easily to both the wall and the shelf. That’s really all you need, as long as it’s properly fastened. And yes, as Alberto51 already said: load the bottom shelves heavily and don’t put too much on the top. Also, if you have glass or decorative items on the shelves, it’s better to place them a bit higher and more securely. For little fingers, there are also silicone drawer locks that prevent children from pulling things out or opening compartments. Really easy, and hardly noticeable 🙂

Absolutely, that’s exactly what I did. Kind of like playing the role of a miniature architect for kids’ room shelves 😉 Good luck with your project!

Always secure BILLY shelves to the wall anchors. Use special anchors for drywall. Protect furniture edges with edge guards. Do not store heavy items on the top shelves. This is usually sufficient for child-safe stability.

I would like to add: When installing BILLY shelves, it is important to choose the appropriate fixing method for the wall type. Timber stud walls require different anchors than concrete or drywall (plasterboard) walls. For the latter, heavy-duty anchors or cavity anchors have proven effective. Additionally, I recommend securing the shelves with at least two fixing points at the top to prevent tipping. For child safety, furniture locks or magnetic childproof locks are suitable, especially for open compartments. It is also important to regularly check that the screws remain tight, as loosening screws can negatively affect stability.
