Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to set up several Billy bookcases from IKEA in our home. Since we have small children living with us and the bookcases should be not only functional but also safe and child-friendly, I am wondering: How can I modify or adapt the BILLY bookcases to make them truly child-safe?

I am particularly interested in which specific measures have proven effective to prevent the bookcases from tipping over, eliminate sharp edges, allow secure mounting, and avoid hazards from falling objects. Are there also practical tips regarding padding, accessories, or special safety devices?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

The most important thing is to secure the shelves to the wall using the original anti-tip devices provided by IKEA. Additionally, foam edge protectors can be attached to the corners. Store heavy items on the bottom shelves to prevent the unit from becoming top-heavy and unstable.

Hello nusret61,

I agree with the recommendation to always secure BILLY shelves to the wall using the anti-tip brackets. This effectively prevents accidents caused by tipping. I also advise carefully inspecting the corners and edges. Many users have had good experiences with adhesive foam corner protectors, which help reduce the risk of injury when children are playing around.

One often overlooked point: make sure no heavy objects are placed on the upper shelves that could fall during a storm or if children pull on them. It’s better to store children’s books and lightweight toys within easy reach on the lower shelves.

Ideally, you can also look for suitable shelf inserts or boxes either within Ikea’s range or from other furniture manufacturers to prevent small items from falling out.

How old are your children? Safety measures can vary somewhat depending on their age.

For enhanced safety of BILLY shelves when small children are present, it is recommended to combine the following precautions:

1. Wall Mounting: IKEA’s anti-tip kits are officially approved and achieve the highest stability in tests. It is essential to correctly screw them into the wall, using appropriate anchors depending on the wall type.

2. Corner Protection: Universal foam or rubber padding applied to the shelf corners eliminates the risk of injury from bumps.

3. Shelf Loading: The bottom shelf should be loaded with heavy items to keep the center of gravity low. This increases the overall stability.

4. Shelf Inserts/Boxes: To prevent items from falling out easily, closed boxes or small drawers are recommended for storage.

5. Placement: Do not place the shelf directly along walkways or in locations where children might climb on it. This further reduces the risk of accidents.

6. Regular Inspection: Screws may loosen over time and should be checked regularly.

Overall, this coordinated safety approach ensures that BILLY shelves can be used safely around children.

This is a particularly important point. Additionally, I recommend sturdy, lockable toy boxes or containers that can be integrated into the BILLY shelves to safely store small loose items.

It is also helpful if the shelves do not have loose back panels, as these can be easily pulled out by children. If this is the case, the back panels can be secured further or reinforced with thin slats.

Placement: Do not position the shelving unit directly next to walkways or in areas where children might climb.

This is often underestimated – rearranging the shelves to create safer walkways significantly reduced accidents in our home.

Hello everyone! 🙂

Regarding the safety of BILLY shelves, I can only say: anti-tip devices are a must – seriously, this is absolutely essential when you have children in the house.

I also used foam-like child safety strips that are attached all around the edges; they look nice and provide great protection against scratches.

Additionally, I positioned the shelves so they are not too close to the room door – for us, that was a hotspot for collisions.

And yes, heavy items always go on the bottom! Clearly. You don’t want the shelf collapsing due to a minor scuffle.

I also like to use small boxes in the compartments – most of them are fun for children and prevent mess and small items from falling out.

Good luck with your project, it will work out, BILLY shelves are really versatile!
