Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my Ikea Platsa furniture with integrated lighting and am looking for practical, effective solutions. I am especially interested in options for the type of lighting that works well – LED strips, recessed spotlights, or other alternatives – and how to best install them within the Platsa system without much effort or visible wiring. It would also be helpful to know if there are any specific mounting options or electrical accessories from Ikea itself that fit, or if it is better to use third-party solutions. I look forward to your tips, experiences, and advice on control, power connection, and safety for projects like this.

I installed LED strips on the underside of the shelves in my Platsa unit. This works well with double-sided adhesive tape. You just need suitable LED strips with a power supply – preferably 12V. It’s best to run the cables through the gaps, which makes it look neat.

That’s a great project! LED lighting works especially well for the Platsa series because it generates little heat and is very flexible.

- Ikea, for example, sells the "Omlopp" LED spot system, which can be easily attached to the Platsa units using the included clips.
- If that’s not sufficient, LED strips are an excellent alternative. Make sure they are dimmable to adjust the light intensity.
- Wiring: I often hide the cables within the furniture’s cavities, sometimes running them directly along the back panel. A power extension cord with a switch makes operation easier.
- For the power supply, you might also consider USB LED strips if there are power outlets nearby.

Safety is important: Only use certified lighting products and ensure that all cables are securely fixed to prevent rubbing or loosening.

If you like, I can share some examples of how I installed lighting in my own furniture.

This is a practical solution, but I recommend paying attention to the quality of the LED strips to ensure the light color is pleasant and no distracting shadows occur. Cheap LED strips often use low-quality chips that produce uneven lighting.

The OMLOPP is functional but unfortunately somewhat more expensive and basically less flexible regarding color temperature and brightness. When installing, it’s worth making proper cutouts so the spots sit flush and no cables remain visible.

Additionally, I recommend:
- Using 12V LED technology for increased safety and easier wiring
- Quick-connect plug connectors to simplify future maintenance
- Employing a separate power supply with overload protection

It’s also important to consider the installation location—placing the furniture closer to power outlets makes handling easier. Otherwise, USB or battery-powered options, as Deandre mentioned, are possible but usually limited in light output.

Overall, the ideal solution depends heavily on the specific setup and personal requirements regarding lighting design and user convenience.
