Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with custom lighting to enhance both appearance and functionality. My main goal is to install subtle but effective interior lighting that automatically turns on when the doors open, providing a pleasant brightness without causing glare or using too much power. Additionally, I might also integrate exterior lighting along the cabinet edges or shelves to create a cozy atmosphere.

I am particularly interested in which types of lighting (e.g., LED strips, spotlights, sensors) work well with the Metod cabinet modules, which control options are recommended (e.g., motion detectors, push buttons, app control), and what technical aspects I should consider during installation, especially regarding power supply and safety. I would really appreciate tips on proven solutions or experiences with specific products!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello diixvin,

I can understand your plan to customize the Ikea Metod cabinets with lighting, as the right lighting makes a big difference. Here is a structured guide on how you can implement this:

- Type of lighting: LEDs are the best choice here. LED strips are flexible, easy to install, and provide even, glare-free light. For focused spots, recessed LED spotlights or small cabinet lights are suitable.

- Automatic control: Motion sensors or door contact switches are practical. Motion sensors detect movement in front of the cabinet, while door sensors react directly when the door is opened. The latter prevents the light from staying on unnecessarily.

- Power supply: Generally, 12V LED components are safer for use in kitchens. You can install separate power supplies near the cabinets—make sure to consider the space behind the cabinets. Wiring can be routed behind the back panel or along profiles.

- Installation tips: Use clip-on profiles or aluminum channels with diffusers, as they look neater and protect the LEDs. For simple control, wireless wall switches or smart-home systems are also a good option if you want flexibility.

- Safety: Use moisture-protected LED products and high-quality cables. Wiring should be well secured and insulated.

In summary: LED strips behind metal profiles, door contact for switching on and off, and a well-hidden 12V power supply. With some planning and patience, you can manage this well. If you want, I can also share suppliers and specific product types.

Good luck!

That’s true, it’s really fun! A smart solution makes things easy, especially if you want to change colors or dim the lights later on – LEDs give you a lot of options. 😄

I installed LEDs in my Metod kitchen myself, using motion sensors and different colors depending on the time of day for ambient lighting. For the interior cabinet lighting, I used flexible LED strips that are simply held in place with 3M adhesive tape, which sticks really well, even when the cabinets are opened and slammed occasionally.

One important thing: route the cables neatly and try to keep outlets or junction boxes easily accessible. And don’t worry about the electrical work – with some patience and a good multimeter, you can handle it well.

If you like, I can share some tips later on good motion sensors and dimmers!

Hello diixvin,

Your concern is absolutely valid and often asked about. I would like to focus especially on safety aspects and practical tips:

1. Electrical:
- If you have no experience with home electrical installations, it is best to work with 12V LED systems, as the risk of electric shock is significantly lower.
- Use power supplies with built-in fuses and devices suitable for damp areas.

2. Installation and cable routing:
- For interior lighting, magnetic LED strips are ideal, as they can be easily removed for cleaning.
- For exterior lighting, you can use aluminum profiles. They improve heat dissipation and extend the lifespan of the LEDs.

3. Control:
- Using door contacts is very practical to avoid unnecessary power consumption.
- Motion sensors are convenient but may activate unintentionally if children or pets are nearby.

4. Product selection:
- Pay attention to the color temperature (Kelvin) – warm white (2700–3000 K) is cozy and pleasant for the kitchen.
- Opt for dimmable versions if you want to adjust brightness later.

I recommend doing small tests with your desired LED lighting on a cabinet first. This way, you get a feel for brightness and installation. If you like, I can help put together a package with affordable components.

Good luck, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!

I agree with that. Simple concept, big impact.

I recommend flexible LED strips with built-in adhesive backing and suitable 12V power supplies. Motion sensors are nice, but the classic door contact method often works more reliably.

In short: LED strip – door contact – 12V power supply. You don’t need more for stable lighting.

Best regards!
