Hello everyone,

I would like to discuss a specific question about stabilizing IKEA Billy bookcases on uneven floors. I have noticed that my bookcase, even though it is secured to the wall, still slightly tilts or wobbles because the floor is uneven—especially when I place heavy items on the shelves. Are there any proven methods to improve the stability of the bookcases without major construction work? I am thinking of practical solutions like furniture glides, shims, or other tricks that some of you might have successfully used. Which stabilization options can you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Hello manopin,

There are several practical ways to stabilize Billy shelves on uneven floors:

1. Adjustable furniture feet: IKEA itself offers adjustable furniture feet that can compensate for minor unevenness. Alternatively, popular third-party solutions also work well.

2. Felt pads or plastic glides: You can stick these under the feet and combine them with small shims to precisely adjust the height.

3. Self-adhesive plastic or rubber bumpers help prevent slipping and absorb minor irregularities.

4. If the floor unevenness is greater, you can cut a thin chipboard or MDF board to size and use it as a base to level the surface through this board.

Also, always make sure the shelf is secured to the wall with the supplied safety fittings to minimize the risk of tipping.

This indicates that in addition to repositioning the feet, the wall mounting might also need to be readjusted. If you have more information about the floor (material, exact height of unevenness), I could assist you more precisely.

Hey manopin,

I had exactly the same problem! 🙂 My tip: Get these really handy adjustable furniture feet, which you can find online, for example. You can simply screw them under the existing shelf feet and then adjust them precisely so that the shelf stands level. It’s really brilliant and makes a huge difference!

Also, I always stick felt pads under the feet – this protects the floor and also provides some extra stability and grip.

Don’t get discouraged, it’s easy to fix! 🙂

Hello everyone,

to fully understand the topic, it is important to know the specific floor conditions in order to provide targeted assistance. Are the unevenness spots localized (e.g., small dents or pebbles) or does the floor have a wave-like character with height differences of several millimeters or even centimeters?

Here is a more detailed approach:

1. Measurement: Measure the height difference between the individual support points of the shelf and the floor. Are the distances uniform or regionally varying?

2. Leveling materials: For minor unevenness (1-3 mm), felt pads or self-adhesive rubber bumpers are often sufficient. For larger height differences (> 5 mm), I recommend installing adjustable furniture feet, which come in different load capacities.

3. Underlay: A solid wood, MDF, or plywood sheet larger than the shelf itself, precisely adapted to the floor unevenness, can serve as a fundamental solution. The feet are then placed on this.

4. Wall mounting: It is crucial that the shelf is additionally secured against tipping, ideally with at least two wall anchors – the attachment should be checked to ensure it is properly fixed to the structure, and the screws are inserted exactly horizontally.

5. Assembly tips: When tightening the screws, make sure to align the feet beforehand. I recommend slightly tilting the shelf forward so the rear feet make contact with the floor first and stand firmly.

Could you tell us more about your flooring (wood, tiles, concrete), the height of the unevenness, and your installation method? Then I can provide even more precise help.

the shelf slightly tips or wobbles even with wall mounting

This indicates an uneven support surface or suboptimal wall mounting. A combination of both issues can also be the cause.

Hello,

for uneven floors, I use adjustable furniture feet or wooden wedges for leveling. Securing the shelf to the wall is always important to ensure stability. Alternatively, cutting a thin wooden board as a base often makes a difference.
