DinsiHello everyone,
I have a question regarding the assembly of Malm drawers from IKEA. I would like to know how to install these drawers without making any modifications, meaning no cutting, sanding, or other changes to the parts as delivered by IKEA. I have heard that there can sometimes be fit issues with Malm drawers because they do not always align perfectly with the runners, especially with older models or different production batches.
I want to avoid any manual adjustments since I have limited tools and am looking for a simple, clean solution.
Is there an assembly guide or a trick I might have missed to install the Malm drawers accurately and without extra work?
Thank you for your helpful tips!

Hello,
normally, the Malm drawers fit together perfectly if all parts are properly aligned. It is important to install the rails parallel to each other and to attach the drawer front correctly.
If it still doesn’t fit, I would recommend first checking all movable small parts like rollers and guide rails thoroughly, as this is often the cause.
You should only make adjustments if you actually notice any dimensional deviations.

1) Preparation: Check if all rails are installed straight and parallel. Even slight deviations can cause fitting issues.
2) Assembly order: It is important to fully and correctly install the rollers on the sides of the drawer. Often, small plastic clips are missing or the rollers are not properly snapped in.
3) Drawer front: This is mounted with special clips that allow fine tuning. Use the adjustment screws to compensate for minor misalignments.
4) Test run before insertion: Manually move the rail to ensure nothing is sticking and all parts move smoothly.
5) If a component doesn’t fit, check whether it can be replaced. IKEA often provides spare parts free of charge or for a small fee.
Summary: With careful assembly and thorough inspection, you can manage adjustments without sawing or sanding. Material modifications are rarely necessary.
Hey Dinsi 🙂
I totally understand the issue with the Malm drawers, I had the same problem once. It’s really frustrating when you have to deal with annoying DIY fixes.
What helped me was to just gently tighten all the screws at first with a steady hand and wiggle the parts back and forth a bit until everything sits loosely. Then tighten everything fully.
Sometimes you don’t even notice how misaligned the system is until it’s all tightened up.
Keep at it, it’ll work out :-)

Hello Dinsi,
Your concern is completely understandable, and I would like to provide you with a detailed explanation on how to assemble Malm drawers without needing any modifications.
First, regarding the issue: The Malm series is produced in large quantities across different production lines. Small dimensional tolerances are common but can lead to significant fitting problems, which often cause frustration and the desire to make adjustments.
I recommend the following steps to compensate for these tolerances during assembly:
1. Inspect the components: Carefully check all wooden parts and metal runners for any warping or obvious dimensional deviations before assembly. Even minor damage, such as twisted side panels or painted areas that obstruct the runners, can cause issues.
2. Accurate measuring and alignment: Use a protractor and a level to verify whether the drawer sides are bowed or warped and whether the runners are mounted correctly parallel to each other and perfectly vertical. Simply screwing the runners onto the bottom or side panel is not sufficient — small angle errors are common here.
3. Use the included adjustment features: Malm drawers are equipped with clip mechanisms that allow fine-tuning. Follow the instructions carefully to set these optimally for precise drawer front alignment.
4. Adjustment without sanding: If the drawers stick despite careful assembly, first check the rollers and their attachment points, as small foreign objects or manufacturing residues often cause interference.
5. Storage of parts: Components, especially made of wood-based materials, react to moisture. If the parts are too dry or too damp, they may warp slightly. Make sure the drawers and carcass acclimate to the room conditions before assembly.
Finally, a question for you: What exact problems are you encountering during assembly? Do the drawers get stuck? Can they not be slid in? The more precisely you describe this, the more targeted the advice can be.
I hope these tips help you!
