Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of assembling and using my Ikea Hemnes cabinets in the most space-saving way possible. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are proven methods or tips to arrange or modify the cabinets so that they take up as little space as possible in small rooms while remaining functional. The cabinets are standard sizes, and I have already considered whether it is possible to alter the internal components or perhaps install several smaller cabinets instead of one large one. I would be interested to hear about your experiences and advice regarding the assembly and space-efficient use of the Hemnes series. Thanks in advance for your responses!
Hello Ayman53, to make sure you install the Hemnes cabinets in a space-saving way, take a look at the different heights and widths available in the series. Sometimes it’s beneficial to combine modules of varying sizes, for example, a tall cabinet plus a small wall cabinet. This way, you can optimize tight spaces. Also, when installing, pay attention to the clearance from the wall and other furniture so that doors and drawers can fully open without obstruction.

I would prefer not to damage the cabinets, but vertical storage sounds really practical for my needs.I beg to differ: Not everyone wants to alter their furniture, and most people assemble Hemnes exactly as Ikea recommends. Still, when it comes to space, it often requires the courage to modify independently. Better to make small adjustments than to settle for inflexible storage.
Hey, great thread! 🙂 I’m using the Hemnes wardrobes myself and can only say: try to think modularly! Use smaller, stackable units and combine them as needed in the room. The assembly is quite straightforward, and the flexibility really adds a lot, especially if you like rearranging!
Interesting point here: You should also consider that static and dynamic loads during renovations must not be underestimated. Removing shelves or installing hooks changes the load distribution. If overloaded, this can cause damage. Proper wall fixing and the use of reinforcement battens are strongly recommended.

That sounds interesting, do you have tips on how to implement this without compromising stability completely?Of course! For example, you can install the shelves with adjustable heights and use half the depth in some areas – meaning you don’t always have to use the full shelf depth. For the vertical surfaces, I recommend using lightweight metal hooks or slats with screw or clamp mechanisms that you attach to the side panels. This creates additional storage space without losing load-bearing capacity.
