Good evening,
we are currently planning our house, and I am trying to gather as much information as possible. At the moment, I am focusing on the topic of security systems. We are planning without a smart home setup, so no window or door contacts are included. Our general contractor installs RC2N standard security on the ground floor. Now we are considering expanding this with video surveillance around the entire property. What are your experiences? Has anyone done something similar? Or would you recommend going for a traditional alarm system?
Thank you all in advance!

If you want to do most of it, your budget will probably not be sufficient. In that case, building with a general contractor may not be suitable either. We are then talking about doors and windows that cost five figures each, cameras in the four-digit range or more...
Therefore, you need to be clear about what you want and what you need for your personal sense of security.
Security is always based on an overall concept with multiple layers.

Unfortunately, based on my own experience over the past 6 years:
- Theft of an expensive grill, a fire bowl, and a wine barrel from the garden (while we were sitting inside watching TV; the stolen items had to be carried by hand through a forest)
- Break-in to the garden shed and theft of garden tools (but they were so careless they got caught at the neighbor’s because they went through sheds and garages)
- Break-in to the garage, taking everything that could fit into a car
=> Not a single time did they enter the house, they simply looked for the easier way in

This is not about fear, but about reasonable planning in advance. I have seen how my friends felt after a break-in. You can try to take this topic lightly, but I will do my best to prevent anyone from rummaging through my private belongings 🙂 It’s not about taking it lightly; you are misunderstanding me. However, there is no objective definition of "reasonable" here. No one wants to experience that... whatever you plan, there will be different viewpoints on it; there is no right or wrong in this area.

I believe that if you want to feel secure and are willing to invest money in doors, windows, and so on, you should not overlook the exterior wall. What good is the best protection for doors and windows if someone can just get through the YTong block with a small tool? Yes, and definitely the moat around the house as well.
