Hello everyone,

we are planning a new build with a gas heating system and solar panels for domestic hot water. Now we are considering whether to include a water-bearing (hydronic) fireplace as well. How large would the storage tank need to be sized?

New build with 217 sqm (2335 sq ft) living space, 2 full floors, 4 people

Best regards

Ask your heating engineer, who needs to coordinate the system accordingly 😉

Your heating system and your living specifications match ours exactly. However, our house is still under construction (the underfloor heating will be installed next week).
Your heating technician should be able to give you precise information. In any case, it should neither be too small nor too large. If it’s too large, the storage tank will require too much energy to heat the water. We have settled on a storage tank of about 200 liters (53 gallons), but this is not final yet. The stove has a total output of 8 kW—5 kW for water heating and 3 kW for air heating.

what all do you want to heat... an 8 kW stove, storage tank, and ideally a 10 kW gas heater? From an economic standpoint, that doesn't make sense unless you get the wood for free.

Hello

The size of the buffer or hygienic storage tank depends on the output of the stove.
If you are interested in a wood heating system, consider how you want to heat and how much effort you are willing to invest. With a generously sized storage tank, this can also serve as the sole heating system.

With solar and a stove, the storage tank must be at least 500 liters (130 gallons). If you install 4 collectors on the roof, it’s better to have 750 liters (200 gallons). Don’t forget to consider the subsidy!
