Hello everyone,

Our house construction is nearing completion. The garage was finished this week. However, since I currently can’t do anything inside the house, I have to make use of the garage first.

The garage measures 6 x 8 meters (20 x 26 feet) and has two sectional doors and one regular door. We left out windows for security reasons. Each opening (door and gate) will have magnetic contacts to integrate them into our home alarm system. Since my classic car is parked in the garage and I also want to work on it there, I need good lighting—of course, also for when someone parks in the garage and leaves through the door.

So I need both a “full lighting” and an “economy lighting.” How can I best set this up? Does anyone have ideas about the best locations for the lights? I don’t think placing them directly above the vehicles makes sense. I was initially thinking of installing the lighting on the ceiling, not on the side walls. Then, one light strip in the middle and one strip on each side about 20 cm (8 inches) from the side walls. The middle one could serve as the “economy lighting” and the side strips added for “full lighting.” Or would it be better to rotate the lighting setup by 90 degrees?

How many lamps (lumens) should I install in the garage, and where is the best place to put the light switches and power outlets?

Thanks and regards,
Stephan

How often do you work on projects? You might consider using a portable main light alongside a bright standard light. After all, sometimes you work underneath or inside the car, and a fixed bright lamp won’t really help in those situations.
