Hello everyone,
My windows and front door have now been measured (city villa), and the installer asked whether we are sure we want a sidelight next to the front door. He personally would widen the door slightly and omit the sidelight.
Here is the door as currently planned:

What do you think? Is the sidelight too small and would it look odd? Would a wider door be more comfortable and "nicer" here?
Best regards,
Mateo84

Not everyone wants hallway lighting when they’re trying to relax at night. And that’s exactly why these have an Off - Automatic - On switch 😉

A real advantage for enclosed niches. For traffic areas, it could be a big disadvantage if you want to control the lighting effect yourself.Or a double advantage if you—let’s say—want to go to the basement carrying two crates (water on the left, beer on the right). Or come upstairs from the basement with a full laundry basket in both hands. There are countless situations where your hands are full and you’d still need to operate a light switch… 😉AxelH. schrieb:
Or a double major plus if you want to go down to the basement carrying two drink crates—let’s say water on the left and beer on the right. Or when you’re carrying a full laundry basket in both hands going from the basement to the upper floor. There are countless situations where your hands are full and you still need to operate a light switch... 😉 This isn’t about the basement, and I’m not referring to automated lighting control down there either. Basements hardly get any natural light, so motion sensors and the like are quite practical there. But here, we’re talking about the entrance area and its pleasant natural lighting, which is why I don’t really see your suggestion as negotiable. There might be others who like the idea of lights turning on constantly in dim conditions (sometimes a hallway can feel like that 24/7), but for many people, that’s not comfortable.
At work, we have motion sensors in the middle of the corridors, and they do a good job there… but at @home, I don’t want that constant switching on and off. I even find it annoying when I’m working in my office—if the light comes on and I go to the copier, I first step into a dark corner. It’s nicer to have a wall lamp or floor lamp instead. But that’s always artificial light. Those who know can tell the difference 😉

But this is about the entrance area and its pleasant natural lighting, so I don’t really consider your suggestion open for discussion. But I explicitly supported natural light in the hallway and even posted a picture of our front door. Didn’t you look at my picture? The tip about the motion sensor came from me only because the original poster’s possible light opening in or beside the front door probably doesn’t let enough light into the hallway.

This is not about basements, and I don’t mean basements when talking about self-controlled lighting. Basements hardly have any natural light, so those devices (motion sensors) are very convenient there. Okay, basement was perhaps a slightly unfortunate example. But we have those devices in the basement, in the ground floor hallway, and in the first floor hallway. So I can move from the very top to the very bottom (and of course also the other way around) even during the darker hours of the day without having to operate a light switch. Both hands remain free for whatever.

Well, in our case, the motion sensors don’t switch on 250-watt halogen floodlights but track lighting whose individual fixtures are more or less precisely aimed at the pictures in the hallway and stairwell, putting the art "in the right light"... 😉

Alright, then I’ll significantly lower the quality... 🙂

As long as you don’t lower my standards :pSimilar topics
