Good morning forum, I’m working on an upcoming extension... A large double garage on the ground floor with living space and a balcony above. The garage will also serve as my private workshop, so it will be heated. Additionally, I occasionally celebrate my birthday there. Now I’m looking for a suitable floor for it. Do you have any ideas???

None of these are bad ideas. So far, my plan to pave the floor is becoming more refined. The stones would need to be without chamfers to create a smooth surface, but I still have a few questions: can moisture rise up from below? If so, is there a way to prevent that? Is it possible to insulate a floor like this? Could underfloor heating be installed underneath it?

DIY solution? The real question here is whether someone knowledgeable should be doing the planning.

Paving—and ending up with a smooth finish? You probably won’t get paving stones that sharp-edged and clean (unless you want marble paving?)—and you must consider thermal behavior. Then take the ground load into account when determining the substructure—from insulation to reinforcement, layer thicknesses, etc. After that, you can also look into the heating system.

Don’t worry, this will of course be planned by an architect. I just want to get some information beforehand to be able to make targeted suggestions and ask questions to the architect.

Take a look under Isolate Floor Coating; it is probably available in Baden-Württemberg. They might be able to help you further.

Definitely include a crawl space, even if you’re not a DIY enthusiast. Your heirs will thank you!

I have thought about that too, although everyone would probably think I’m crazy.
