Good morning forum, I’m working on an upcoming extension... A large double garage on the ground floor with living space and a balcony above. The garage will also serve as my private workshop, so it will be heated. Additionally, I occasionally celebrate my birthday there. Now I’m looking for a suitable floor for it. Do you have any ideas???

Roughly speaking, the heating pipes of an underfloor heating system are attached to the steel reinforcement of the slab and then embedded in the concrete. The concrete is then leveled to a smooth finish, eliminating the need for a screed.

Ok, can you explain that to me in more detail, for example, to what extent it could be done by myself, and what advantages or disadvantages there are... I could imagine having one heating circuit per garage. That way, the one that is really used as a garage would only need to be heated very rarely, while the other one, used as a workshop, would be kept at 16-18°C (61-64°F)...

Hello Peter

Try searching for Floortech foundations, for example.
For my house, I constructed the entire slab, including the garage, covering 250 m² (2,690 sq ft).
I did everything myself, including the concrete work.
Most suppliers also allow for some work to be done by the owner.

Many thanks!!!!
Now that I have researched thanks to GOOGLE, I have even more questions for you: I cannot just build a slab-on-grade but have to construct a foundation (2m deep) since I am attaching an extension to an existing house. I also believe that it is not considered living space and will be only minimally heated, so a build-up similar to industrial floors should be sufficient.
What do you think the build-up should look like?
Is this cheaper than a conventional construction?

Hello

Whether a strip foundation is necessary depends on the structural engineering.
I know that most slabs do not require one.

Okay, there will be a radiator in the part of the garage used as a workshop (which can be separated) for quick heating. However, I still want the option to heat the entire garage to around 18°C (64°F). I am considering installing insulation and a vapor barrier under the slab (I need to build a strip foundation!!!), then attaching the underfloor heating to the reinforcement of the slab and embedding it in the concrete. After that, the surface would be properly smoothed and tiles (slate tiles) would be glued with a medium-bed method without a screed.

What do you think about this approach?
Can I control the underfloor heating using an RTL valve?
How should the heating pipes be laid in the concrete, and what spacing should be used?
