Hello everyone,

In our detached house (built in 1965), there are several spots around the door frame where the plaster is loose and crumbling. This has created a gap of about 10mm (0.4 inches) wide, as the old plaster extends beneath the door frame. Apparently, back then the walls were plastered first and the frame was installed afterward. Now I am facing the problem that I want to partially replaster the walls soon, but we don’t want to remove the door frames (they will be refurbished later).

How can I create a clean plaster edge at the junction with the frame despite the gap? Do I need to fill the gap beforehand? My first thought was to fill the gap with expanding foam and trim it flush to the frame with a cutter knife, but I’ve heard that expanding foam can cause the frame to warp. What would be a proper solution here?

Best regards,
Andreas

That’s still the professional way to do it today.
Remove the door frames, plaster the walls, and then reattach the prepared frames. If you try to plaster or patch around the frame, you won’t be happy with the walls.

I fully agree with ypg. Remove the door frame and properly plaster the wall up to the door opening.

Is the door frame standing on or within the screed? I’m also familiar with door frames being placed on the pipe floor and thus embedded in the screed. In that case, removing the frame without damage is basically impossible. What speaks against replastering the door frame as before? You can fill the gap with mortar. Two-component door frame foam should also work for filling. It doesn’t expand as much as regular polyurethane foam.

The door frames are not embedded in the screed. They are nailed in place. I will try to remove one. However, since we have 14 door frames of this type, it is quite a lot of effort. For me, the effort has to be justified by the benefit.
