ᐅ Chimney and Carbon Monoxide

Hello,

I was shocked by the news about the six young people who died.

I’m wondering if something like this could happen in our case, since we have a newly built house with a fireplace and small children.

We don’t have any mechanical ventilation or similar systems; the fireplace is only used for cozy atmosphere and occasional heating. When it gets too warm, we tilt the window open.

We burn regular wood. Could something like this happen to us as well? The local chimney sweep included a note on the last invoice that he is happy to inform about and install carbon monoxide detectors.

What do you think about these concerns?

Don’t confuse or mix up CO2 with CO

Yes, absolutely correct. Sorry.

Assuming the room air is sufficiently saturated, only a few breaths are needed before losing consciousness. Oxygen deficiency usually shows up as sudden tiredness—there’s no pain, strange smell, or anything like that.

CO detectors are not very expensive, if I recall correctly. We once had one in our apartment with an (old) gas-fired room heater. It is important to replace them regularly (every 7 years?). When in doubt, consult a chimney sweep / flue inspector.

Yes, pure horror... maybe they fell asleep and didn’t wake up...

Where would you install a CO2 detector like this? I guess I don’t need an inspector for that?

Can someone recommend one to me?

I have now ordered two CO detectors as well. I chose some from Binwo. Two units for 23 euros. You’re not supposed to get cheap ones, but based on what I found from a Google search about this model, it performed just as well. This is explicitly my personal opinion.

They should be installed in every room with a fireplace and in the bedroom, I have read. Also, they should be placed at least two meters (6.5 feet) away from the fireplace and installed at a height of 150 cm (59 inches).

CO, not CO2 ;-). We had it installed in the hallway. The gas boiler was in the kitchen, with the children's room and bedroom accessible from the hallway. This was coordinated with the chimney sweep at the time. The detector is mounted on a wall (not on the ceiling).

In my opinion, CO detectors should be installed as low as possible.
