IKEA-Experte4 Nov 2012 23:38If I understood correctly after reading several times, you want an 80cm (31.5 inches) wide flat extractor hood installed in a 70cm (27.5 inches) high wall cabinet, and a 40cm (16 inches) wide and 70cm (27.5 inches) high tambour door cabinet to stand on the countertop?
Hi both,
Thanks for the answers. Maybe I should explain in more detail:
The countertop is 80cm (31.5 inches) deep and 3m (10 feet) long. It will have an 80cm (31.5 inches) ceramic cooktop installed. However, there is no “original” extractor hood cabinet that wide. Can I use a standard 80cm (31.5 inches) cabinet and install a non-IKEA extractor hood inside? Has anyone of you ever used a cooktop wider than 60cm (23.6 inches) with a built-in extractor hood?
The countertop is 80cm (31.5 inches) deep around the cooktop (50cm (19.7 inches) on each side). On the countertop, between and below the upper cabinets, we want to install a sliding shelf. Originally, we wanted a roller shutter in that space, but IKEA doesn’t offer a roller shutter in the right height or color (we prefer white). We are currently looking for non-IKEA alternatives. The sliding door is still available, 1.20m (3.9 feet) wide and 70cm (27.6 inches) high, which is great on its own. We just don’t know if the doors will slide properly when the cabinet sits on the countertop, because I think that kind of sliding cabinet is actually meant to be an upper wall cabinet… I hope this makes more sense now 😀

IKEA-Experte5 Nov 2012 15:36Can I use a standard 80cm (31.5 inches) cabinet and install a non-IKEA extractor hood in it? In principle, that is possible. You need to check the technical drawings from the hood manufacturer to see if it fits.
The countertop is 80cm (31.5 inches) deep around and next to the cooktop (50cm (20 inches) on each side). We want to add a sliding shelf unit onto the countertop (that is, between the base and wall cabinets). Originally, we planned to install a roller blind there, but IKEA doesn’t offer rollers of the right height or color (we would prefer white). There is about 20cm (8 inches) of space between the wall and the cooktop. A typical wall cabinet with a depth of 35cm (14 inches) will no longer fit there; it would need to be significantly reduced in depth. Also, considering grease and other splashes from cooking, I wouldn’t want a cabinet front directly behind the cooktop.
The sliding door unit is still available, 1.20 meters (47 inches) wide and 70cm (28 inches) high, so in itself it’s a great fit. But we’re not sure if the doors will still slide if the cabinet sits directly on the countertop (I think sliding cabinets like that are actually meant to be hung on the wall). If the cabinet body rests directly on the countertop, the doors will no longer slide, or the cabinet might not sit properly on the countertop at all. You would need a small plinth between the countertop and the sliding door cabinet body, which means an even larger gap between the countertop and the wall cabinet. At 70cm (28 inches) height, I think accessing the cabinets will already be awkward unless you are very tall (around 2 meters / 6'7").
hey IKEA expert!
Thanks for your reply....
I think you misunderstood... nothing else is supposed to go behind the cooktop... that is about 50cm (20 inches) away.
Unfortunately, I suspect you’re right about the sliding shelf… I just thought that since the glass display cabinets (wall units) can be placed directly on the countertop and they open, maybe the sliding element would have some kind of base underneath as well, even though in the picture it doesn’t look like it.
This range hood is really stressing me out... I’m still totally new to this, but from what I’ve read so far, it seems recommended to have a 90cm (35 inches) hood for an 80cm (31 inches) ceramic cooktop... when I try to install it in an IKEA cabinet, the problem is that there’s no 90cm option. I have the impression I’ve seen range hoods where only the bottom part is 90cm (35 inches) wide and the built-in portion above is narrower, so the 90cm width is only under the wall cabinet. But maybe I’m just imagining this and it’s not possible... we are interested in a Stat model and I want a stainless steel one, a free-hanging type is definitely not an option 😕
Looks like I need to keep searching.
Oh, and we are both 180cm (5 ft 11 in) tall and have our wall cabinets almost that high in our apartment, so we know that works for us... if we can’t use the sliding elements (or the roller blind), we might have to go down 10cm (4 inches).
Thanks and have a nice evening!
Best regards

IKEA-Experte5 Nov 2012 21:05The cabinet with sliding doors is only available 120 cm (47 inches) wide, so I assumed it was also meant to go above the cooktop.
Maybe you can find a suitable hood from manufacturers like Berbel, Gutmann, Best...
