kidigaHello everyone, I have a rather annoying problem: dust keeps settling in my Kallax shelving compartments no matter how often I clean them. The compartments remain open because I like to keep them visible and easily accessible, but the dust accumulates very quickly—especially in the lower rows, where ventilation seems to be worse. I’m wondering if you know or have tried any practical methods or tips to effectively reduce or even prevent dust in these open Kallax shelving compartments. I am particularly interested in solutions that can be easily integrated into everyday routines without much effort. Has anyone had experience with special covers, regular cleaning techniques, or interior fittings for the compartments that help keep dust away? Looking forward to your ideas!
Wow, that’s really an interesting problem! 🙂 I experienced something similar and ended up using transparent fabric covers. They let light and air through but do a great job of keeping dust out! This helped me a lot! 🙂 Just lay them over the shelves—it almost looks like decoration, and the dust stays away. Give it a try—you’ll be impressed!
For dust prevention in open shelving units like Kallax, I recommend the following structured approach:
1. Install semi-transparent doors or inserts made of acrylic glass to minimize dust accumulation while still allowing quick access.
2. Use closed boxes or baskets within the compartments to limit dust exposure.
3. Regularly vacuum using an upholstery nozzle and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth to prevent buildup.
4. Monitor and improve room ventilation and humidity levels, as dry air allows dust particles to circulate more easily.
Together, these measures can significantly reduce dust.

I know that all too well! 🙂 It’s hard to manage without covers; dust loves open compartments! I bought clear plastic boxes that fit perfectly into the Kallax compartments. This way, you can store everything inside and keep the dust out. Also, every two weeks I do a quick “dust attack” by using a humidifier nearby – this greatly reduces the amount of dust, too! You’ve got this!

Attach dust protection film or acrylic glass panels at the front of the compartments. That sounds reasonable, but I’m concerned it might reduce the tactile feel or clarity when using the compartments. Wouldn't that somewhat negate the benefits of having open compartments?

Thanks so far for the helpful suggestions!
