Hello everyone,
I recently got a Kallax shelf unit converted into a workbench because I wanted more storage space for DIY projects. However, I’ve noticed that when using it as a workbench, it quickly accumulates a lot of dust and wood chips. Especially when sanding or sawing, the dust spreads everywhere on and inside the compartments.
I’m curious if any of you have experience with this and if there are effective solutions to manage the dust problem on the Kallax workbench. In particular, I’d like to know if the shelves can be better sealed or protected, or if there are recommended additional dust protection measures.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Sealing the compartments with thin PlexiglasThanks for the tip, that sounds practical. I would especially use Plexiglas since it keeps the look intact. Do you happen to have suggestions on the best way to attach the panels without damaging the shelf? I’d like to avoid drilling if possible.

What type of work exactly?Mostly sanding and small cuts with a saw, sometimes drilling. I often work directly on the Kallax since I like the height. The workbench is on a solid concrete floor, ventilation is average, windows are nearby but there is no direct extraction system.

Fabric curtainsI find the idea of curtains interesting, but I’m concerned about dust accumulation in the fabric. How often do you wash them? Or is that enough as a coarse protection?
Looking forward to more tips!

If a fixed extraction system is installed, make sure the airflow does not blow directly into the Kallax compartments, as this would only stir up the dust.
It would also be advisable to incorporate a slight slope in the work surface so that dust and shavings don’t easily fall into the gaps and compartments.
How flexible are you regarding modifications? Is altering the Kallax or purchasing additional elements an option?

Any suggestions on the best way to attach the panels without damaging the shelf?A good solution is self-adhesive magnetic strips. You get a strong bonding surface on the shelf frame, and you can attach the plexiglass panels to the magnet side. This way, you can also remove the covers quickly without drilling.
Alternatively, clamp profiles that fit around the edges also work, but this is a bit more complicated. If the shelf is lightly painted or veneered, always make sure the adhesive is suitable.
